Home owners insurance
Anyone want to recommend a good homeowners insurance company? I will be asking for quotes soon but wanted to know if anyone has any companies they would recommend or warn us to stay away from.

If you are looking for the cheapest insurance you may want to look into a private broker to mix and match, however, there is something to be said for signing up with a large, reputable company (like State Farm) and sticking with them forever. Over the years you will receive discounts and rate reductions and at some point you will be unable to find cheaper insurance without risking insolvency in an emergency.
I had a very poor experience with Farmers Insurance. I'm not sure that it is the most ethical company. I also had a poor experience with Nationwide. I don't think they are unethical necessarily, just a crappy outfit.

I have had AAA for auto and home for the last 4-5 years. I had to file a claim with the Auto, and they were very quick and helpful about the repairs. I haven't had to file for the home so I can't speak to how they handle a claim. Their rates however are generally cheaper than the other major carriers..(I looked at Allstate, Farmers, Chubbs, Firemans Fund)

Another vote for USAA. I do everything with them, mortgage, auto loan, auto insurance, home owners insurance, even rental insurance for our rental property....the only thing that I don't use USAA for is actual banking, since I find it inconvinient to not have a local bank I can go to.

I also second the "avoid Farmers" suggestion. In my experience with Farmers, after your first claim is filed, you will be canceled at renewal time -- even with a 5 year history of no previous claims. Never had that problem with State Farm.

My husband and I have Amica for both car and house insurance. We have never had to file with them though. But they were rated #1 a couple of years ago, and we got a good price.

We've used Farm Bureau (Home & Auto) for the last several years (both while living in Michigan & here in TX). There prices were the best amongst all that I called and I have never had any issues with them when I had to file a claim.
