People are already fat enough.

I jsut read the master plan again and it seems they might add another dorm. Supposed to be for 11 k students.. without the new lofts it was 2500 ..I think.

Create a professional districtAlong Calhoun, the plan calls for an urban residential street that caters to graduate and married students.Create an undergraduate districtAlong Wheeler, we’ll build house-like apartments that blend into the surrounding community.
Campus Master Plan

They want to "Link the University and the surrounding neighborhoods". Don't see how this is gonna happen. The thought of 3rd Ward and U of H linked makes me wanna run away real fast

Kinda off topic, but here

If you scroll down to the very end you can see pictures of the Georgia Tech Campus. Looks beautiful, guess that's what they want.

Midtown in Atlanta was a seedy area 30 years ago, but then again it was nothing like 3rd ward. It was a decaying business area with a few prostitutes and transvestites, not a residential neighborhood. GA Tech also had/has a strong residential presence on campus that was strengthened by the new development. U of H in terms of development is not, IMO, at the same level as GA Tech when they began their project.

Unless a STRONG police presence is included with the changes or an upswing in neighborhood revitalization I would think that the area would lure professional students, and professional thieves.

I also think that the GA Tech project was successful, mostly because it is in the middle of Atlanta's business district. Midtown is surrounded by the Arts center on one end and downtown on the other. I think that at most it is 2 and a half miles from end to end.

Walk 1 block off U of H's campus and the scenery drastically changes.

The really rough area by UH is what lies directly to the west. You basically have the Spur 5 on the east side. South is University Oaks, which is a very nice stable neighborhood. The worst part of University Oaks was a collection of smaller houses on its perimeter facing Wheeler. All of those are getting demolished I believe, for the construction of the commuter rail line. The combination of those two factors will only serve to bolster that individual neighborhood. To the north more or less is 45 and you have Eastwood and Broadmoor right across the freeway there, both revitalizing areas.

If UH's redevelopment plans really come to fruition it could spur redevelopment on the rougher western front. Right before the economy was slowing down you already had builders jumping 59 from Midtown's eastern border and building town houses around Dowling in 3rd ward. There has been some opposition to that, which is another story, but good or bad I expect some of that development will continue to press into 3rd ward when the economy gets rolling again. It will certainly continue to grow in the warehouse areas north of 45 right there.
