I'm a Single Mom with two kids, and we will be moving from Oklahoma to Houston at the end of this month. I will be working in the 77040 area, and I'm looking for a 2/2 Apartment starting at $1000 in a nice neighborhood. I've been looking online but most apartments in this area seem to be Section 8 or income based housing. And from the reviews of these apartments, they don’t sound safe for children. Does anyone have any suggestions on apartments and good schools in this area? I don't mind commuting to work if it’s a 20-40 minute drive. I'm just looking for a safe place for me and my kids. Also, does anyone know of any good after school programs? Since it will be just me and the kids, I would need a place for them to go after school until I can pick them up from work.

Thanks!

Have you considered renting a house instead of an apartment?

Is there some particular reason you need that zip code? I would suggest moving either toward town a bit or out a little further. If you go out, the CyFair Schools are much better rated.

What's wrong with Jersey Village? I had to cut through there a couple weeks ago when the Beltway was stopped dead. I was really shocked at how that area is completely over looked by home buyers. There are some very nice homes and the location is a hell of a lot better than the "way out there." Are the schools bad? Because the houses looked nice...or at least like all the other MPC's. On har, a lot of that zip code goes to Cy-Fair.

She's looking for an apartment though.

hmm. Looks like you can lease a townhouse with a garage for 1000 and under in the area.
Are those ok?

There are some nice apartments on west rd. ( west rd. exit).

There are new apartments to you're left of 290 ( don't know the name) and to the right there are apartments called Trails of Rock Creek. You said " starting at 1000". That's a lot for that area. I think the 2 bed rooms at TofRC start at 900 and they are nice.

I don't have to live in the 77040 area, I'm just going to be working there. Like I said I don't mind commuting. But I would love to stay near a decent Elementary School.

And yes it has to be an apartment. I want to move in as soon as possible as I start work on July 6th. And I think there is alot of red tape to go through when it comes to leasing townhouses. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

And I don't know if anything is wrong with Jersey Village, but from the reviews I've seen online, the apartment complexes aren't to safe. Like I said I'm looking for an apartment thats not Section 8 Housing or income based. Since I'm not familiar with Houston, all I have to go on is the information I get online.

As for my starting price; I was looking at apartments in the 77040 area starting at $700, but I've been told that if I want to stay in a safe neighorhood, then I need to go up on my price. Thats why I said starting at $1k.

Thanks for the help!

There are places in Memorial and the Energy Corridor that are pretty nice with good schools. Not a bad commute at all. I don't really know the pricing though. The Alexan at Memorial Bend in 77024 right at the Beltway and I-10. Super Elementary school, Middle and High School. There are some very nice places along Eldridge, and as long as they are zoned to Barbara Bush Elementary you should be fine. Some new place called The Brownstone as well...I think that's the name.
