Go to www.workintexas.org and create a profile.

Then visit the WorkSource locations in Houston and they have people who can help you.

Do you know anyone here? Perhaps you should get a Houston address on your resumes and have your friend/family mail you the responses that come in. Unless you have to move now, probably isn't the best thing to move without a job. If you have family / friends here who can loan you their address for a while that might help.

I agree with texas7. We just recruited for an open position where I work and the people with Houston addresses are preferred because we don't have a big budget for bringing people in from other places to interview or paying their relocation costs.

And I also agree with Texas7. Employers do not hire, they do not even read resumes with an out of state address.

While Houston's economy is a little better off then most places you must know that there are few jobs around. I have people all the time coming in begging for a job and they dont even know what it is they are applying for.

For every open position there are thousands of applicants.

I moved from Chicago to Houston April 07, - hired on a telephone interview because I was a unique combination of Proe Designer / Technical Writer. Lasted 6 months then immediately hired at Jacobs ESCG for 10 months. Laid off Aug 15, 2008 and couldn't find an engineering job in Houston for 6 months so I packed up back to Chicago. The job market in Houston just collapsed after Oct 15th, 08 - Craigslist Job Listings dropped a lot!

Default No Job :(

It sucks, don't it? In any case, unless you are extremely qualified as an engineer, accountant, etc.-- you better make sure you have at minimum 3 months worth of rent/food/gas saved up if you don't already have something lined up.

My significant other and I made the jobless move from Vegas about a little over a month ago. We had appx. 15k for moving and living expenses. We are both college educated and have quite a bit of experience. She scored a job within 2 weeks, and I've been waiting for the "perfect" job (which I hopefully found this upcoming week).

I didn't hear back from anyone for nearly 45 days, so you just have to stick with it. Houston is a big city... so there are quite a few applicants. In any case you can score a lovely 8/hr job pretty easy out here (desperate times call for desperate measures). Good Luck!

You'll probably just need some experience and be willing to take any job. Here is a website I like to check out it's the google of job listings. Hope this helps.
