[quote=kittytoes2006;9298497] We want something in the country preferably, even a doublewide mobile home as long as it is clean and nicel On a lake??? Anything as long as it's not just outrageously high in rent. We are paying $1000 here now and will NOT be able to do that again. It's ridiculous.

This is part of the problem, if you are only able to pay 1000 per mo or less you probably will not find an area where you feel comfortable. Others in here have mentioned The Woodlands; no way for under 1000 per mo. Try renting a condo on Lake Conroe; you can find one of the smaller/older ones in the price range you are looking for. No matter where you go, unless you an afford 100 acres somewhere will you be sequestered from any and all crime though.

Normally you have to pay for driver license numbers, but to get a copy of their signature so you could forge a credit card application?! This appears to be a cultural thing if I had to guess. I've never seen this kind of shyt before.

Wow, that's amazing that all of that has happened to you in such a short time! I definitely sympathize with you and wish you the best. However, I can tell you that I've lived here for 15 years and have had no issues whatsoever. Call me lucky I guess...

Like someone else mentioned, wow - the OP has been hit hard it seems. I've lived in Houston (Houston proper, not outlying) and never been a victim of anything like that. For the police situation, that's terrible. The officer's badge number should have been taken and reported, along with the plates of the d-bag that assaulted her. And geez, I pay way less than 1,000/month where I live, though I don't shop at Wal-Mart or live way out by Highway 6 where things seem a bit worse.

It's also unfortunate that the police are perpetuating fears about crime in all parts of the city..alas.

I always cringe when I see people post here and say they are moving here from somewhere else, only want to pay $xxx for a place to live, and have all of these other criteria in regards to location, safety, aesthetics, etc. I'm glad that they're checking it out before coming, but sometimes the expectations sound a bit unrealistic in relation to the budget. If you're not used to Houston and unaware of the many do's and don'ts, you could be setting yourself up for a shocking experience and disaster by moving into some seedy areas that fit your monetary requirements, but clearly lack the other things you would desire to be happy and feel safe. Make sure you do your research of the areas you're considering BEFORE you buy/rent. Houston is huge...all the areas are not the same. As the above poster mentioned, there are probably areas you can go to with that price range that may be safer and a better fit for you, but they still may not be the perfect place that you envision. After researching, you may discover that you can't afford to live where you want in Houston, then you either stay where you are or make the decision in advance that you will deal with whatever comes your way and go in eyes wide open. I'm sure many people would have been more than happy to give their opinion on that area of town.

the city isn't for everyone.

Magnolia is where you want to go. Maybe go to Angleton and get an acre.

That's a good point. $1000 is a low amount to pay for a rent house. That means the house is probably going to be sold for less than $100k you're in one of the lower income areas. If you're in Alief, that is the area with the highest crime rate in Houston so I'd move anywhere else asap.

I looked on HAR.com in Tomball, and I'm surprised there is not more available for rent under $1000.

Here's a listing in Magnolia you might like:

31215 Wide Oak Cir, Magnolia, TX 77355 - HAR.com

You might also check Craiglist

All you have to is go to message boards for small Texas town to see that living in the country or an exurb isn't a panacea to crime.
