My girlfriend and I went to Gigi a couple months ago. We are chinese american and like our Chinese food to be authentic Chinese, so my bias is towards my mother's cooking and restaurants in Bellaire's Chinatown.
That being said, we were pleasantly surprised because the food there is actually pretty good. I've always had a homegrown cynicism of any Chinese food that doesn't reside in a bona fide chinatown area, but the food from Gigi is very respectable in terms of taste and authenticity.
The only problem is the cost - I feel that the food was overpriced for what it was (authentic Chinese food in small portions) and that I was paying instead for the overdone interior and upscale mood. The place is very lavishly decorated and tries to channel that feel of a late 1800s Chinese opium den. I'd check out the centerpiece in the main dining room - it's a gigantic fake leafy flowering plant hanging down from the ceiling. Overall the place was a bit much for us in terms, but decor is always in the eye of the beholder (though considering the restaurant's owner, maybe it's not so surprising after all).
One thing on the menu to try is the "heavenly beef" appetizer. It's beef that's been seasoned and oven-dried, making it dry and chewy but not too tough.
Overall a very good place for food, but IMHO overpriced and the decor gets a bit ridiculous.
