Umm, err, uhh.
Well...
It's one of those "you kinda have to experience it to understand the difference," things.
Whereas my eyes might be peeled in the Riviera, my eyes are turned away more often and with a grimace even most of the time.
I try to avoid it, the fishing's good, but as late as last summer, the beach generally sucked around those parts.
Just remember that if you're going to drive out that way, watch out for anything that looks like clay. Don't drive on it, you'll regret it. Anyhow - is there still a real path down the beach, up next to the fence line, since Ike?

Crystal through Indian are all decent beaches for swimming. Avoid swimming at the San Luis Pass beaches on either side of the toll bridge. It's very dangerous there.
East beach is more of a "party beach," so if you've got family, probably better to avoid there on summer weekends.

It also depends if you want to pay, if you want to drive on to the sand, and how many people you want to be around. I stay away from the east end and usually head west toward the Jamaica Beach area - there are lots of public access points open but they all vary - some are just parking areas with a walkway to the beach, others have minimal vehicle access on the sand and barriers you can walk beyond, and there may be a few farther out that have full vehicle access.
Last weekend there was lots of "stuff" in the water though (fish, jellyfish, seaweed, etc), and the tide had just washed up tons of seaweed but the weekend before it was much cleaner (relatively speaking - the water always looks like chocolate milk ). I'd check the weather/tidal conditions before going if any of that is a concern.

Yes, good info. Also be careful on Bryan Beach toward the Mouth of the Brazos. You keep hearing about people being swept away by the current in that area.

Going from Sugarland, I'd drive the extra 20 minutes and go to Matagorda. Fewer crowds, nicer sand, less driving through town. Six bucks gets you a beach pass for the whole year as opposed to a single entry in Galveston.

I would go to a pocket park on the West end of Galveston 45S exit 61st at the seawall take a right and drive on down until you see beach access. I think Pocket Park 2 has re-opened, if not just find a beach access point you like and set up your stuff. Much less crowded than if front of the Seawall areas around 61st. It gets so crowded there.
take meat tenderizer in case of jelly fish. They were out last weekend and it really does take the sting out

Any of the private beaches like Stewart that keep the sand raked with those big tractors.
