We are considering a move to either Dallas or Houston.
friends in Dallas tell us that Dallas is a better place to live.
while other frields in Houston tell us that Houston is better.

Can anyone share experiences on either?

We are looking to relocate to a nice area with good schools, employment opportunity, low crime, affordable housing, not too humid, etc.

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Houston has more trees and greenery - stays green year-round (unlike Dallas which turns **** brown 5-6 months out of the year).

For the most part, the homes themselves seem nicer in Houston, with lush trees and greenery. Dallas is nice in the older parts where the trees are more established, but a barren prairie everywhere else.

Dallas is zoned and has a better land-use plan.

Houston has nice areas in every direction. Lots of interesting parts and hidden gems. Great inside the Loop, All down the West, and Terrific suburbs in every direction - outside the beltway.

Dallas is nice in one direction - North. Not-so-nice everywhere else - to downright horrid in South Dallas.

Houston is more of a melting pot, Dallas is still very much segregated.

Houston has better homegrown and unique local restaurants. Dallas has more of the latest in trendy (Brinker-style) chain restaurants.

Dallas is colder in the Winter and Hotter in the Summer, but with less humidity.

Houston is nice from late Oct. through May, then gets unbelievably oppressive with the heat & humidity.

Traffic sucks in either city

Crime is an issue in either city, especially in the bad parts.

Dallas is a bit trendier, being the home of the Fashion industry for this part of the country. So everything hits Dallas before it hits Houston.

Both cities are home to many, many Fortune 500 companies, with Houston barely edging the Metroplex.

I think Houston is more interesting than Dallas, and I think Dallas is better planned than Houston.

Both are great towns, you'll like either one.

Not everything. When it comes to this, the two cities are basically interchangeable. They have to share. Dallas has more upper class stores, but Houston has higher upper class stores, if you know what I mean. Dallas has a Barney's New York and I think they're getting a Bergdorf Goodman, they also have more Neimans than Houston. But Houston has the higher end luxury goods sales and designer boutiques. Lastly, Houston's Post Oak Blvd. is the Fifth Avenue of the south, and this area is more well known.

What will probably end up happening for you is you'll be looking for a dress in Dallas that is only in Houston and v/v.

You can find what you're looking for in either one expect the low humidity. Expect to fry in the summer in either place.

It's more like getting baked in Dallas and boiled in Houston. Now, if you want to get fried, go to Florida.

Um, naw that's an overkill. There are plenty of places hotter than Houston, and a lot of the evenings here are some of the more refreshing ones I've ever experienced. But nevermind that. Houston's hot. WE GET IT. I'm sure that we can move the conversation in a different direction.

Having lived in both cities and having spoken with friends who lived both places, Dallas is much more "pretintious" or "materialistic" that Houston. Dallas is "old money" Houston is "new money". Houston's population is more fluid, as with the Med Center and Energy Corridor, there's always people relocating in and out. Also, it's nice to be close to the coast....

Houston is not new money. Houston is young money in the same fashion of New York and Los Angeles. Houston is just a ways behind.

I think Houston is more 'cosmopolitan' and has an internation 'feel' to it. Lots of green. It's humid, too - really humid - but folks live with it (don't let the A/C go out!). Galveston is ~2hrs (depending on where you live), the Clear Lake area is nice (they've got NASA). Ditto Mr. Football.

IMHO, Houston has plenty of nouveu riche AND old money, depending on what part of town you're in.
