YOU TELL YOUR NEIGHBOR THAT IS THE BIGGEST LOAD OF HORSE**** I'VE EVER HEARD!!!
I am a native Texan and I think that's just a complete load!
I guess these folks weren't "real" Texans, either (show this to your neighbor!)..........
(btw, look at the maps of downtown Houston, downtown Dallas, downtown San Antonio, and downtown Austin; then look at the Texas state map; see how many of the following names you find).
Branch T. Archer, Virginia
Henry Smith, Kentucky
Sam Houston, Virginia
Davy Crockett, Tennessee
Stephen F. Austin, Virginia
James “Jim” Bowie, Kentucky
James Fannin, Georgia
William B. Travis, South Carolina
James Bonham, South Carolina
Susanna Dickinson, Tennessee
Lorenzo de Zavala, Yucatan, MX
George C. Childress, Tennessee
David G. Burnet, New Jersey
Mirabeau B.Lamar, Georgia
If you're glad you're here, WE'RE glad you're here! Welcome home to Texas!
"You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas"---David Stern Crockett, U. S. Representative from Tennessee, to his constituents, upon learning he had lost his re-election campaign.
"GTT"---"Gone to Texas, often abbreviated G.T.T. or GTT, was a phrase used by Americans immigrating to Texas in the 19th century[1] often to escape debt[2], especially in the South and Midwest. It was often written on the doors of abandoned houses or posted as a sign on fences."---Wikipedia, link here
(btw, google each of the above names; the wikipedia entries are fascinating. You'll also find great writeups, along with pictures and a lot of other info, on LS Junction. For newcomers, the "LS" stands for "Lone Star". Yes, I know this is corny as all get out, but I still choke up a little when I talk about "the old Lone Star". We ARE different. If you want to be different, too, come be different with us!).
It just irritates the hell out of me when somebody tries to "hiflautin" it, making out like "if you're not a native Texan, you can't ever BE a Texan". My parents were from Arkansas, their parents were from Tennessee. My folks came to Texas looking for a better life for themselves, and then had children. My Mother, who is in a nursing home in San Antonio right now, used to tell me (repeatedly) how she loved it when, as we were coming from Arkansas (visiting their parents), when you get to Texarkana, the road widens out, smooths out, and the sky gets bigger. My Mama may have been born in Arkansas, but she's a by-God Texan through and through.

A very educational and interesting post, Malvie. I love the quotes (especially from Davy Crockett) and your family story. Made me a bit verklempt myself! I'm a relatively new Texan too (by way of Ohio and New York) but I would say most Texans I've met -- native or otherwise -- are pretty friendly and welcoming.

We are from the northeast :-)
Trust me....we have loads of the Lone Star decorations, and now talking about adding 2 poles in the cul-de-sac and proudly fly the TX flag...same height as the national flag ;-)

Thanks for sharing and setting people straight on interesting facts that were probably unknown to most, Malvie!

Referring to Topaz as "IT"?
REALLY?
That kind of childishness has no place here.
