Galveston is one of our regular summer vacation spots. We were last there about a year ago, before the hurricane.

This year we're thinking of going back to Port Aransas, or maybe South Padre. Seems like Galveston would still be recovering and not back to the way it was.

Am I right? Has anyone vacationed there this summer? What was it like compared to pre-hurricane?

Steve

From a vacationer's perspective, Galveston is fine. A few of the Strand shops are still closed but everything else is up and running. Biggest problems are still with residences and other mostly non-tourist businesses. Don't forget Padre had a hurricane last year too.

I believe Padre is worse off than Galveston. galveston is back up and running for the most part. Only a few shops and attractions like the submarine are still closed. Padre, according to my family down there, has many shops and major hotels still closed.

Galveston is thriving and just fine. Restaurants, most shops and hotels are all up and running. I think the beaches look even better...most of the garbagy stores were taken out by Ike and the coast line looks so much better for it! JMHO!

Hmm, I did not know that.

Good to hear that Galveston should be considered again. We have a basic routine we generally follow:

Fri Day 1: Arrive late afternoon, walk to the beach, splash around, change and go out go for dinner.
Sat Day 2: Schliterbahn all day
Sun Day 3: Beach in the morning. Aquarium in the afternoon.
Mon Day 4: Beach in the morning. Strand in the afternoon
Day 5: Leave in the morning.

Sometimes we combine days 3 and 4 into 1 day.

I saw AL Roaker (spelling?) from the Today Show in Galveston promoting a "Hope for Galveston" fund raiser. Looks like they are making a ton of cash for the island.

I was planning a similar trip to Galveston this August - a question - what and where is the Aquarium?

There is a much longer thread with a lot of details that for some reason doesn't post below as a "similar thread" but should:

Is Galveston Finished? (Houston, Converse, Bolivar Peninsula: HOA, insurance, loan)
