And not everyone in Conroe is a redneck.
If you want land for horses, you'd be better off looking at Conroe over The Woodlands. Do neighborhoods in The Woodlands proper even allow livestock in their deed restrictions? I think you'd have to look on the east side around Oak Ridge or be practically out to Magnolia to find land w/ less restrictions?
I grew up in Conroe in the nicer section of town (Longmire area). It used to be rural, but became very popular about 20 years ago with the upperclass, who could buy large amounts of land and place their McMansions on it...and still have horses and other livestock (one doctor has donkeys

). There are a lot of estates popping up in that area that promise houses on an acre or more of land; I'm not sure if they allow horses though.
Plenty of shopping to be had with three Wal-Marts, a Target, and lots of big box stores. Most of the new development sits in the North side of town, centering around 3083. Additionally, most of the expansion as far as housing goes involves the western side of I-45.
The freeway is a wreck at the moment, but once the expansion is completed, there should be several lanes stretching all the way up to Willis. Till then, you'll suffer through long commutes in stop and go traffic.
Entertainment options include Lake Conroe, two movie theaters, the Outlet Mall (though it's practically dead), lots of shopping, a few local parks (Candy Cane is the major one w/ the Rec center), and the Creighton Theater for plays. Houston is a 30 min. drive away and The Woodlands Mall is only about 10 mins away.
