Jluke mentioned the HEB on OST @ Scott and I'm surprised that store is still in business. It was a piece of crap 5-6 years ago, and I also think it was the only HEB in Houston that had a wide selection of 40's in their beer cooler.

It's the closets one to where I live, so now I just drive out to Pearland H.E.B
I remember once going to the one on OST and it was this random dude trying to break into someones car with a hanger. That's when we kind of mugged him and he ran off, I'm just like WTF. That place is crawling with homeless people and prostitutes. It's even more annoying when I'm trying to pay for my damn food and some crackhead comes up and ask me for change. I'm like hell no!

Costco for bulk paper products, and meats for BBQ's.
HEB Bunker Hill if I have the time
Randall's at T&C, if I don't have the time.
Rice on Memorial for produce and little tastie things.

The new HEB "Market" stores (for example - the "Sienna Market" one in Sienna Plantation, the "Woodlands Market" one, or the "Buffalo Market" under construction) are GREAT stores. They are far better than their older stores and incorporate the best features of Central Market.
We had a new Kroger open at Sienna Plantation around the same time as HEB. It is very nice, but people are voting with their feet -- the HEB is MUCH busier and is doing very well in this underserved market area. They are really battling it out, e.g. with repeated promotional offers being mailed out to local residents, which for us consumers is GREAT!

I only went in there twice (in passing to/from Bams or that Auto Zone) and never saw that back then. After a couple of people got shot up in that store during the daytime I made it a point to never stop by again.

Central Market on Westheimer is rather chic. Ever been there? One must weigh and price one's own produce, but then one never knows who will be standing next to one for service at the lobster tank...

Personally, I don't care which store, as long as the price is fair and the produce is fresh.

I know but in Palo Alto, CA. There is a store called 'Andranicos'. It looks like Neiman Marcus. 1 Gallon of milk is like $10. Restrooms are luxury. Thats the place people want to be seen. They will escort you in and out.

Whole Foods Market or Kroger Signature. I'm looking forward to the new Kroger Marketplace that is opening near Pecan Grove in October.
