It's named after New York City's Houston Street. They pronounce it How-ston and we pronounce it Hyu-ston. We just like to be contrarians down in these parts.
And don't believe the hype. Houston isn't named after Sam Houston. Who's ever heard of naming a city after a famous war hero who happened to be the first president of the newly formed country he helped to liberate? That's just crazy talk.
Houston, Alaska... now, that's a city named after Sam Houston of Texas.

I thought Sam Houston was born in Houston, so they named him after the city.

No, it's named after Juan Houston who was the first one to bring Tex-Mex to our fair city. Sam Houston changed his name to Houston and tried to take credit for inventing the chimichanga.

After Texas became a country the capital was moved to Houston from West Columbia it eventually ended up in Austin which is named for Stephen F Austin. The man who helped settle Texas by bringing 300 families here.

What the heck is wrong with you people? Everyone knows that Houston came about when a guy named Sam was doin that wacky weed. His friend, Stephen F, came around and was like, "Oh man . . . You Stoned?" Which to Sam sounded like, "Oh man . . . Youstunned?" Sam couldn't control his laughter at the word "Youstunned". Eventually he built a fort in his back yard and named it "Houston". Though spelled with an "H", he was adamant that it was silent so that it would sound like "You" . . . as in "Youstunned".
The fort only saw Sam and Stephen F in its first months, but then they invited their friend Chuck Norris over. Chuck was so happy to see such a wonderful creation that he roundhouse kicked the small fort into the large metropolis we now know as Houston.
True History.
