I will be making a short trip to Houston, and I plan to get around by taxi with my little one. Does anyone know if car seats are required in taxis in the Houston area?

Thanks!
Pam

I don't know if they are required, but would you feel safe with your little one unrestrained?

I would think so since that's the law for normal cars, but maybe call a Taxi company here. Yellow cab comes to mind. Yellow Cab Houston taxi service

It seems to vary from state-to-state:

State Child Restraint Laws

It looks like in Texas, your child can ride unrestrained if there are not enough seat belts for every passenger. But, if it's just you & your child traveling, I would assume your child would have to ride in an appropriate car seat or booster.

I am a stickler for seat belt & car seat/booster use having known & lost too many people who were riding unrestrained on "quick trips" and were thrown through windshields. I figure that the inconvenience of installing car seats in a taxis (or planes for that matter - that can be a royal PITA!) is better than losing my children to death or having one or both suffer from debilitating injuries. I realize some may think that overly cautious but that's just my personal preference for my family.

I would think your child would be much safer with you renting a car and a car seat.

Default Hmmm...

I was down on Edgebrook the other day... I saw a woman in the passenger front seat holding a baby, feeding the baby a bottle. In the vehicle after that, I saw two kids in the back seat of a car... STANDING UP!! I guess these people have not fully assimilated yet, and don't know the laws?

I used to take the car seat and booster whenever I went to any other city, used them in planes, taxis, etc if you are coming to Houston by plane you can check through the car seat and booster. Then take them into the taxi.

Most people who care about their own safety avoid rusty old cabs (w/dubious brakes/tires, seatbelts, airbag systems and stability controls) driven by usually inept drivers w/unverified driving records

In any city, would carefully choose a newer rental car and bet on own driving skills over any cab/limo

Sadly, this is an all-too-common situation in many predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods. What can be done to get the word across to folks who don't listen to news on TV, don't have internet access and don't read the newspaper?

Common sense doesn't cost a thing.
