How bad is the Fire Ant problem in Houston and its surrounding areas? How are you coping with the problem and what are you using to treat the problem?

I have had a few ant mounds this year, nothing major. Most of the ones I have caught at the beginning and treated them with Amdro. My neighbor had an extremely large mound that he let go untreated, and he put Orrthene on it. It smells bad...but it worked.

I don’t recommend this, but if those little meanies (ants) have pissed you off (bitten while mowing the grass), a "shot" of gasoline works VERY quickly... (it kills the grass too, and causes an upset wife).

NEVER put gasoline on a fire mound. Especially when we are in a drought and dry conditions. Powdered laundry detergent gets rid of them ASAP w/ no risk of burning down your house and 1/2 the neighborhood and is nontoxic. Same goes w/ a pail/pitcher of hot water w/ liquid dish soap.

Terro makes a good fire ant killer I have found. Gasoline is bad idea, but have done it myself, getting rid of watered gasoline. Using fireworks (black cats) to destroy mounds is fun, and sometimes works too.

Thanks for the info. That gave me an idea and I looked up info regarding the fire ant at the Texas Imported Fire Ant Reserch and Management Project. They had a list of products to use on the buggers. I now know what to do in case I move to a house with Imported Fire Ants.
