I heard it is nice to take the ferry with the kids- where do we take it from? Is there parking nearby? Can we bring dogs on the ferry? How long does it last? We're doing another beach day this weekend and I thought the ferry would be a nice addition...

It is off harbourside ....take Harbourside and go thru the port,Strand pass UTMB and follow the signs to the ferry. There can be a long wait on the weekends. You will see wait times on signs along 45. I dont think you are allowed to let your dogs out of the car when the ferry is going. Look for dolphins they usually swim alongside the ferry boat. Let us know what Boliver looks like...I havent been since the storm.

It's maybe a 10 minute ride after an hour long wait on the weekends.

It's harborside, as mentioned. There is parking, but you cannot take dogs unless they're secured in your car. (In other words, no "walking on" with dogs.) With a car, the wait time can be up to a couple hours. The ride is only about 10-15 minutes, but there's always the return trip. Kids do love the ride, and they will almost always be able to spot porpoises in the water. Most kids get a kick out of that. Take Broadway (I-45) almost until it ends, taking a left at 2nd/Ferry St. There's a sign indicating where to turn. Ferry St goes straight to the boat.

I took the ferry in 12-08 right after they fixed the bridge at the cut [Rollover pass] and it was a disaster on Boliver. They were running less ferries at that time so the wait was long even though there was not a whole lot of people getting on. It should be better now.

If you just want to ride it for fun, then park in the parking lot and walk on.... once you're on Ferry Rd., stay in the right lane for the parking lot. There is usually no wait, even in the summer. The cars waiting to board the ferry must stay in the left lane and that's what can back up for miles. I seriously doubt you can walk on with a dog.

I hopped on for a couple of round trips that first weekend in May. Other than there being no houses, the Bolivar side is back to normal otherwise. Long wait, included.

Are citizens with concealed handgun permits allowed to carry guns on the ferry?

The wait-time to ride-time ratio is much better on the Lynchburg Ferry.
