George Carlin said we need a place for our stuff. =)
Also sometimes people who are evicted/foreclosed might use the storage temporarily, while they're between residences.

I never understood it myself. Space is just one of those things that people can never get enough, and we are not getting any more land on this Earth. Besides, like any business though, the better ones will weed out the bad ones. I personally use Amazing Spaces. They are a self storage facility in Houston. They for instance have air conditioned units so I don't have to worry about deterioration of documents over time. But for the most part places like that will be better as long as there is a demand for their services. The others will be bought out, or close down with time. You'll see
