Sure it's dismal but like anywhere you can make it as good or as awful as you want it to be. Put more in, get more out and that isn't just a terrible cliche.

I agree with Stephanie, it's pretty dismal here. The heat really makes it difficult.

But November, December, Jan. Feb, March and April more than make up for July, Aug, Sept. (at least IMO)
(After living in Ireland for 2 years, England for a total of 5 years- I was more than glad to have nice, bright, sunshine during the winter. By October it was dark at 4:30 in Dublin)

Oh no, not in my opinion. I wish we had cold weather in winter and I wish spring wasn't so hot. But in your case I can see why you would like it.

I can certainly see your point also, especially if you are from North Carolina, with mountains, etc. But I don't think I could deal with snow on a frequent basis :
I must add that I am about as Texan as you can get though,(born in Ft. Worth, lived in Wichita Falls, Sherman, Mineral Wells, Beeville) so I'm probably immune to the heat. It really didn't get to me until the last 2 weeks of August this year.

I love Houston, born and raised here, spent 5 years in Austin as a college student, came back here for a job. I've been to every major city, but Chicago and San Diego so I feel like I have some basic for an opinion.
Is it the best American city, no. Is it an under rated city, emphatic yes. It's probably because I was raised here but the no zoning/chaotic look appeals to me. I much prefer it over to how cities like Dallas and ATL look. I will agree that it does make some areas look ugly, but it makes other areas look unique/beautiful.
I could have stayed in Austin, but it really doesn't have much to offer besides 6th street, UT/college atmosphere in the inner city, and awesome recreation. Personally, don't care for Dallas too much so I went back to Houston.

Can someone please show this person the one-way out of Houston. Repeatedly he/she keeps bashing Houston for no mercy. If you don't like Houston that much, for the peace of this forum help yourself and find that exit sign, and please stop bashing the city for no apparent reason. You wished for cold weather in Houston. Give me a break. If you want cold weather, go to Canada. You can even come to Minnesota. Cold will come natural for you and you don't have to wish for it.

Regardless of what city I live in, I still go to work, run at the park, eat at fine restaurants, go to the beach on weekends, go to concerts and bars with friends, etc. Houston is huge and I enjoy that fact that I am always discovering something new about this city, whether it's new restaurants, bars, venues, or entire neighborhoods.
I think someone mentioned that it's not where you are, but who you're with. That really is so true. I think many people don't enjoy Houston because they are here for work and not close to their friends, family, and the culture that they have grown up with. I love the fact that so many people living here are from other states and countries. Houston does not feel like a typical Texas city to me (not that there is anything wrong with the typical Texas city feel).
I get so sick of the summer weather comments. It's hot, big deal! Put on some breathable clothes and get outside anyway. I hope I can use my pool until November. I like snow as much as the next guy, but after about a week of it, the novelity runs out. Besides, it's less than $200 round trip to fly to Denver for a weekend of skiing.
........
.......... We have it pretty good, people.

see a television/movie/music/reality star??
and its not even who you are with so much..... it is how you are with yourself.......
can you imagine what it was like before every single thing was air conditioned??
i was born and raised in houston and we somehow survived the 60's riding around in my mom's 1959, royal blue, vw beetle with NO AC!!!!! of course, that is NOT something i would care to repeat..... EVER......

I'm sorry to those of you who love Houston, but there are a lot of us who do not care for living here.
My husband is from Houston, he can take it or leave it. He is also in the oil/pipeline business, which is why we are here.
But, instead of just complaining everyday, we are actively seeking employment elsewhere. And I have to say, I will never live in the Houston area again. It may be wonderland for some, but it is dismal for me. Just stating my opinion, as many do on this forum.
Good luck to us all, those who stay and those who leave.

good for you taking action to fnd a better life for yourselves..... hope you do....

sounds like me.... only in 1986 and in reverse..... and now i am SICK TO DEATH of the endless day after day after day after day of gray sky and dead trees that we endure here every winter.......sure hope you don't have that in NC..... don't even mind the cold so much.... and the snow IS nice for a day or 2 after it falls...... but thats about as good as it gets for the entire season(s) from november to april.... and we are not even getting much snow in recent years....... i'll GLADLY trade the 5 months of depressing GRAY for the 4-5 months of oppressive heat and humidity.... oh yeah.... we get that too here..... only about 3-4 months worth though......
so.... i guess where this is going is that EACH city/area/location has its pluses and minuses.... there is no nirvana..... and really, no hell..... its just a matter of each person weighing those pluses and minuses for him or herself.......
