We closed down this thread because a small group of narrow minded people decided to destroy it.

I've opened it again.

1) Racially motivated and rude comments will be dealt with by infracting the poster.
2) The op has asked some simple questions that she would like answers to.
3) Keep your answers polite and follow the Terms of Service.

If what happend in the last page happens again, I will not simply delete the posts, I will hand out infractions. If you don't like what's being discussed, don't read it and don't comment on it.

For those that answered the OP's questions, thank you.

My pleasure. I hope you and your children decide to move to Houston and enjoy it. Houston is a wonderful city with welcoming people. I liked living in Houston so much that my husband and I just bought a house and we are about to move back after I have been away for ten years.

And again, from a racial perspective, I can't say you'll never get anything at all--but I can't imagine it will be any worse than any other major city. In fact, my guess is it will be better.

I'm sorry to anyone I may have offended with my question, it was not my intention at all. Maybe I worded it wrong, I'm not sure, but here in the Pacific Northwest this question would likely not have caused as big an uproar as it did here. Again I do apologize I was just wanting to make sure a move to Houston, or Texas in general would be beneficial to my two lovely daughters and not detrimental or dangerous in any way.

When I was in high school in Cypress (which was not long ago), there were "race wars" going on between the redneck kids and the blacks-and-black-friendlies. There were a lot of big fights going on and they had to bring in a bunch of cops to try to settle things down. A lot of kids were taken away for bringing weapons. Many things were written on walls all over the school.
(Cypress in a NW suburb...typically like most suburbs but it does have a large hick population)

Inside of Houston, you should not expect any such problems. Houston is a big city and, as such, is tolerant of many different types of people. There are many people from mix racial backgrounds who don't suffer discrimination at all.

Racism is not as overt in Houston as it is in many parts of America, but if you want to avoid it altogether, you'd need to emigrate, since it is endemic in the US!

What do you think the unspoken word at the end of Joe Wilson's taunt 'You lie?' was? I hesitate to say but I'm sure you can supply it.

Understand that the pacific northwest and Texas are very different places in many ways. You will find that people in Houston are generally very friendly, it's easier to start a conversation here. My sense is that race issues do not come up as much in the PNW (I lived in Seattle area for 10 years), as even the bigger cities like Seattle are 70% to 80% white and they are very liberal. Everything is more mixed here but I think you could be very happy, it's a good place.

Default Back to the OPs question...

Houston is a very diverse city and I've found it to be more welcoming to everyone, including bi-racial couples/children than any city I've been to.

There will always be racist people everywhere, I don't think anyplace is immune from this. Most do it because it might be 'cool' with the groups people associate with, and frankly, it's been instilled by parents, or family through the years.

But to be honest, I have noticed that in Houston, most people do not blink an eye when they see bi-racial couples, just as they don't react as much to gay and lesbian couples; I think it's been accepted to a large degree in Houston over the years. Houston has definetely evolved into a 'progressive' city over the years, at least in the 25+ years since I moved to the area. Granted, some people will not react, but have stong feelings either way, but the difference is these people are polite enough to keep their thoughts to themselves.

Good luck.

To the original poster,

I agree with the above staement. I have two multiracial children. I myself am mixed with British and African ancestry. My husband is of German descent. We relocated to Houston (actually Katy west suburb of Houston) 4 years ago from Baltimore. We have yet to experience the type of racism that we have experienced while living in the northeast and mid atlantic regions. I grew up in Washington DC and my husband grew up in South Central Pennsylvania. We both noticed that Houston is not as racially segregated as many cities in the northeast and midatlantic regions of the USA.

Houston is a very international city with people from all over the world. There are a variety of ethnic groups just on my neighborhood block alone...Pakistani, Indian, Caucasian, African American, Japanese, Chinese, etc. I have met many people from other parts of the USA or from other countries. Actually, the majority of people in my neighborhood appear to be from California. My family also attend a very culturally diverse church.

Will you experience racism here? Maybe so or maybe not. There are racists people everywhere. I grew up in Washington DC. I think DC is more racially segregated than Houston. Yes, you may get the occassional stares in some parts of Houston. While other people wouldn't even care. Now I'm not going to lie and say that there are not some bigots and racists people here or that you will never encounter any problems. With a city as big as Houston you will meet both friendly and not so friendly people. However, I think Houston is a great place for a multiracial & multicultural families. So far, my family likes it here.

If you have any specific questions or concerns, then send me a personal message because I usually don't visit City Data that often.

Good luck with which ever city you decide to relocate to.

Well a great big thank you to all those who gave me honest, respectful info on the Houston area, but after researching it more Ive decided its not really for my family. I have decided that the Corpus Christi area, surrounding areas, and San Antonio areas will work better for myself and my family. Thank you so much for your helpful info and blessings to all
