So where have you been going? Just want to know so I don't get ambushed in the bathroom by Sea Bass.

Don't bother with the Chron, if you want cool things to do check Houstonist or the Houston Press. There is PLENTY to do...if I didn't have to get a babysitter every time I wanted to hear some live music I'd be in heaven.

I'm often bored when I'm in Schaumburg and Des Plaines for weeks on end without a car. Very, very bored.

Put on a good pair of Street skates, and take it to the streets. No finer way to sight see our fine City.

I think the difference is how and where you grew up as a few of the posters have said.

From my experience, a lot of metro city transplants are used to constant stimulation e.g. new night spots, new restaurants, meeting new people, etc. and alot of Texans are more into close knit community activities e.g. similar bars, parties-get togethers, events, festivals, etc. Thus, the "family only" oriented events comment from a earlier poster.

Quick info about me. Grew up in So Cal. Went to school @ UT-Austin. Interned in DC. Lived in Chicago, Louisville, and Seattle. Currently living in Houston and have been here for over 5 years. I have dated Texans and native Houstonians. Currently dating a Houstonian.

Now, people may say, " hey we have new nightspots, restaurants here" and we do. I think Houston's culinary scene is underrated. But it's not so much the new places and the such, because a good night out is much more than that. It's also the people. The culture. It's very different here. And when you run out of things to do, it comes to light.

Now, I like to meet and make friends of all kinds and types. So naturally, I have plenty local friends here. It seems though whenever I go out with them, it's same crowds, events, get togethers, etc. So, I'm usually around them during birthdays, bbq's, and football. Fun, but a little monotonous for me.

I grew up differently. I was constantly moving. Sports, after school events, tutors, traveling, etc. Many evenings I was meeting new families from my parents work, new kids from my school, etc during dinner functions and outings. Many transplants I met had similar upbringings.

Call me ADD, but that is what I'm used to socially. I just can't do the same things all the time. I feel like I'll have plenty of time to do that when I get old. Hearing stories from my local friends, they are like clockwork. Monday-Sunday. Very structured. The gf couldn't understand how it could be so different. She finally saw it first hand when we stayed in So Cal for 4 months.

Now, I am not saying that one is better than the other because I like Houston. A lot. Houston has been good to me. Just highlighting the difference from a transplants perspective. So, instead of name calling and making inferences of being losers, respect and try to understand us transplants and we will do the same. Or least I will.

Lastly, if you're a transplant and not married, or a younger gen/kid, it can get a bit stale, or for the latter, i guess it can get bOrInG!!!!!! but that is what vacation is for and it works for me!

I recently moved to Houston and I just went to Agora for the first time yesterday! The atmosphere beats any coffee shop in Austin that I've been to. I also here that's not even the best coffee shop in Houston! The more I learn about this town, the more I like it!

Get Yourself a nice set of Street Skates, and get out and explore Houston's many New Skate and bike trails. More are being completed all the time. They are safe, and well maintained. and run through a wide variety of Houston Landscapes. Plus ya meet the nicest People out on the trails. Birds of a feather, escaping the rat Race. "Discovery Green Park" is Skater Friendly, down town, and has good food, and free music. Very nice.

Once the connection between Target and North of the Bayou is complete, one would be able to skate from Say Onion Creek to Discovery Green?
