Anyone have some favorite getaway spots within a half-day drive of Houston? We went up to Broken Bow, Oklahoma a month or two ago and loved it. Wondering if there are other places around that are good for a long weekend?

Rockport, on the coast. Its got a different vibe from most of the rest of the Texas coast.

Do you want to get out of Texas? If so, try Biloxi or Gulfport, MS.

I don't live in Houston, I'm just a frequent visitor here as I usually am of cities I'm about to visit.

But, if I did live there, I think that I would probably make at least a weekend or two over to New Orleans as it's only 5 hrs.

I think I also would make at least one trip per year out to the West Texas NPs for some hiking, and perhaps 3-4 trips out towards Austin, San Antonio, and Hill Country.

I also think, though I wouldn't drive this route, unequivocally, I would probably try to do a weekend by plane over to Monterrey, MX, Mexico's Second City, at some point, given how quick and cheap and regular plane trips are there.

Jefferson, TX, is pretty well-known for weekend stays. Also Granbury. Both less than a half-day drive.

Possum Kingdom Lake might offer a similar experience to Broken Bow.

South Padre Island (avoid during Spring Break).

Hot Springs might be within your drive time range.

Lafayette for S. Louisiana Cajun culture / partying (might be oriented more toward young adults).

I'll endorse rural Arkansas. Everywhere from Crater of Diamonds to Hot Springs is a nice drive up the EastTex. Also, while it's a bit of a further trek, Alpine, Marfa and Big Bend are well worth a long weekend trip.

Might look at Hot Springs, AR. Also Eureka Springs, AR is also very pretty, but a further drive.

Those Texas towns mentioned I wasn’t familiar with-but they do look nice. Nacogdoches over that way looks cool too.

It looks like 6.5 or so to Hot Springs compared to 3.5 for Hill Country-is Hot Springs area just significantly better on certain levels in terms of scenery, ambiance of towns, etc?

Natchitoches, La is about to blow up with flowers in the spring.

Lots of places to go in the Hill Country. I will be there later this month.

Eureka Springs is very scenic. It's built into the hills or mountains or whatever it is. It's oddly liberal, too.

Brenham will have the bluebonnet thing one month early according to Randy Lemmon. The only 5 star restaurant in Texas is somewhere near Brenham.
