I am new to Houston. We never own a house with pool before. Seems there are a lot with it.
What's the typical electricity cost for maintaining the pool. Does the pump need to run 24/7? Thanks

I run it 12 hours in the summer and it does increase your costs a bit. My house is 3100st built in the mid 60's, no insulation and bad windows. Pool pump runs 12 hours all summer and my elelctirc is usually no more than 350.00 in peak summer. I keep it at 76

No, your pump does not need to run 24/7. During the warmer months, when the pool is used more often, we run it about 6 hrs a day. Of course, there is usually only 2 of us using it. In the Winter months, we cut the pump down to 4 hrs a day...I know using a heater will spike your bill considerably.

I agree with ShelbyGirl1. I have an old pool (15-20 years old). I run my pump 8 hours in the summer and 6 hours in the winter. Like her, it is only my wife and I (and the dog) who use the pool, so it stays clean. It does add to your electric in the summer (probably $25 - $30 dollars a month).

LOL...Thanks...He's logged more hours on that sun platform than any of us. Just a matter of time before he's asking for an "umbrella drink"!

Just remember, it can be different if you have a "salt water" pool with respect to the amount of time you need to run the pump. It needs to be running so that the chlorine generating cell can work, and time running is proportional to the amount of chlorine generated (although you can vary the chlorine cell output too somewhat). In the summer the chlorine demand is much higher, so I tend to run the pump 10-12 hours. 4-5 hours hours in the winter seems to be enough.
