See, that's just it. These 7.25 an hour people at VS are doing all that. And the credit card pushing makes me sick. The corporations profit tremendously from these cards yet the employees get nothing for opening accounts. To me, that's a good example of corporate greed. Also, people keep making the point that "you don't have to work at a job that pays that low." A lot of people do. They have no choice.
You are missing the point. The $7.25/hour people have volunteered to work at VS for that wage. Greed is not relevant here. The employees of VS have chosen to accept $7.25/hour as a fair exchange for their labor. The only persons whose opinions are relevant on the "fairness" of the wage VS is paying are those who have clearly stated through their actions (taking the job and then showing up to work day after day) that they think it is a fair wage.
Each of us has the choice to better ourselves through college, vocational training and smart decision making. That includes paying dues sometimes as one climbs the financial ladder. Apologists for those unwilling to do so only create more problems for society by excusing said choices. To artificially increase the wages of those who have not earned them only decreases the value of the wages of those of us who have. And that to me is a truly "unfair" proposition.

Sound more like being profitable than greedy. Isn't that what businesses are supposed to do? Make a profit?

Well, not everybody does, but most do. They made a lot of choices getting to where they are, or they are starting in the work force (or starting over) and the inexperienced and unskilled are plentiful and thus not able to demand a higher wage. It's a meritocracy, the better your skills and experience the more you can get in wages.
Being from Chicago, I guess I expected to pay a bit more. Yes Chicago is more expensive to live in, however it isn't that much more. My brother made a good point also. There is no threat of unions in Texas to drive up the wages of low skilled jobs. I hadn't thought about that. As for this quote:
So are saying that people who want to make more money are greedy? And don't you think the guy who wants more government cheese benefits is the exception not the rule?
greed is in the eye of the beholder, not because people who want to earn more money are greedy but because GENERALLY SPEAKING, those who earn less call the people earning more greedy. i am a business owner, and i have actually been called greedy by a former employee because i wasnt going to pay him a bonus or extra money for doing something that was part of his job. his response "why are you so greedy, your not going to pay me anything extra because you want to keep the money all for yourself". this is actually the dumbest thing i have ever heard considering it was all i could do to keep the doors open so he even had a job!
as for "the exception to the rule" i am not sure what you are getting at. i get the impression from a good % of people on the "govt cheese" side of the argument that they would rather get the govt cheese then get a job. case in point at the time of katrina i went with my father (2 different companies) to several shelters and offered employment to some of those who needed a hand up. out of the more then 300 people we both talked to, 5 took a job, 1 for me and 4 for him. of those 5, 2 still have a job. the one who went to work for me left after a month (give or take) he had one quit after a week and not sure about the other one i know he is not there now. the 2 i know quit both went back to welfare checks and a fema trailer.
SoHove, that's true, but it also could be argued that it punishes those who don't have the ability to educate themselves.
i gather you mean college education? if this is the case then i say this is nothing more then an excuse. again case in point: i graduated high school and joined the army, eventually became an army ranger, got out of the army, and went to work for my father making minimum wage in 1994 ($4.75/hour). i learned how to do the labor of the job and after 3 yrs finally got my own crew and so on. i now own my company so i can make (or lose as the case has been the last 2 yrs) the big money.
if that is not enough, my father opened his company in 1987, after working for his father for about 7-8 yrs. now here is the kicker, my father dropped out of high school after the 9th grade. my father was sent to my grandfathers company twice by the work force commission only to be turned down both times because my grandfather didnt want people to think he was favoring my dad on the job if he did well.
if that wasnt enough, my grand father opened his company in the early 1950's after being in the army (ww2). he grew up as a wheat farmer and working at my great grandfathers grain mill. he dropped out of school after the 3rd grade. and was driving a grain truck from pueblo colorado to denver at age 12. in 1985 when the recession hit the construction industry (and everyone else) he "loaned" his company $15,000,000 out of his personal bank account to stay afloat.
moral of the story, getting an education is always a good idea BUT is nothing more then an excuse to a lot of people. some people seem to think because you have one you will get that higher paying job, and some tell themselves, and their kids that because they cant afford college they will never get that job so dont bother trying.
It's one thing to be a warm body and another thing to be actually any good at what you're doing.
Retail is generally low profit margin so that doesn't help, but they generally get what they pay for, just like the consumers. Ideally it's a meritocracy, but not always, same with the rest of business. If that was the case, these Wall Street CEOs wouldn't be getting paid millions in bonuses while their firms are getting bailed out by the government.
The military is an excellent way to get a very good education. I also think it teaches those who never had structure or a good family life, loyalty, value and morals.
Rigas, how is that an excuse? 9 percent of the population has an IQ of 80 below. They cannot get a college education. They aren't smart enough.
For those who truly are unable to care for themselves or function in society, please see my post about society being built around the family first (not government or corporations first). It is the responsibility first and foremost of the families of these people to care for them, then the extended families, and then volunteer organizations such as churches, synagogues, etc. to care for them. It is certainly not the obligation of a corporation and it should not be the responsibility of government. Government is there to keep us safe from invading armies and those who want to do physical harm or steal things. It's (should) not (be) there to wipe our butts or noses.

One of my friend works at GAP and they get a 50% discount. I am pretty sure that GAP would not do this if they wouldn't buy the clothes for that price.
