I am going to shop around for furniture for our home and would like to know other's experience/tactics at different stores.. Is it common that customers straighly asking for % OFF the sale price ?

Need to buy a Dining set / Family room / Living room / bed room and few more depending on the prices/deals.

Appreciate advise.

When you go to a big chain like Star Furniture, the Roomstore, Ethan Allen, etc. they will not negotiate. The price is the price. Of course, they always have sales going on.

When you go to some of the discount stores around town, they will negotiate. I'm talking about the type of store that is individually owned and the owner might even be there. They often have catalogs and can order pieces for you if they don't have what you want in the showroom.

We bought a lot of furniture from Ashley Furniture last year around Thanksgiving. The deal was if you were in the store between 8.00am - 10.00am you got 20% off then the percentage decreased every couple of hours after that. Don't know that they are doing the same sale again but if you could find out and wait until then it was a good deal.

You can negotiate if you buy a sofa and say a dinning table. Don't expect anything if you're only bying a sofa.

We used Bel for living room furniture & they gave it to us Tax Free; Basicaly it was around the back to school shopping time. We had gone to Ashley & a few other stores but none could match what we got from Bel & Bel came highly recommended by some friends. However I am not saying I won't shop around before I buy from there again....

We negotiated at Bel and got tax free and some free accessories thrown in but we bought a whole house full of furniture. Now we go to a small place on 59N where we can negotiate directly with the owner and get good deals, but again we buy large quantities from him. Like anyone they just want to make a profit on their deal so depending on how much your spending is how much they will negotiate with you.
