Default Asparagus in Houston?

Article in the Comical today that sez you can grow Asparagus in Houston. I'm not much of a gardener, other than being the financier and manual laborer in my wife's horticultural endeavors, and those are all ornamental. But I've been playing with the thought of doing some gardening of edible stuff just for fun, and since I love asparagus I thought it might be a good starter.

Will asparagus grow in Houston? | Houston gardening | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Question for the knowing - the article says to start with one year old plants. Are those easy to find/purchase around here? Any recs on a place to get them?

Thanks

Default Great success...

I know someone who has great success with asparagus out in Hallettsville. She supplies some of the markets on the west side of town. It was still growing about a month ago AFAIK. I'm sorry I don't have the particulars, but I know it can be done.
