Default Relocating to Houston....Need housing advice

My husband and I are moving to Houston within the next few months. We lived in Houston two years ago in an appartment in the Montrose area. We are now looking for a home. Our budget isn't big (under 300,000). I will be working at HCC central campus and my husband will either work downtown or near Dairy Ashford and I-10. We aren't sure if we want to live in a suburb, or closer in to town. Any advice people could give about suburbs and neighborhoods would be really appreciated. We don't have kids, but we would still like a neighborhood with good schools. Thanks!

Also try 77008. Not sure about the public schools, but there is lots of new building in this area for under $300K.
