any good areas to live near the universities_ Rice/UofH
nonetheless, I am wondering if there could be an option of living in proximity of either of the universities. I will be working downtown and my wife will be taking courses at the university...My wife kind of prefers atleast one of us to be closer to home. Suppose if we live in Katy or sugarland both will have to drive for about 30 mins to an hour depending on the traffic, while our kids will be at a school in sugarland/ katy depending on our residence. I mean we all will be in different directions... so, if we live near the universities then atleast my wife will have the flexibility to take care of the kids if and when the need arises.
SO please suggest any good areas so that the commute for my wife or myself is not too long ( as it would be from Katy or sugarland)and if need be either of us can make a mid-day trip to home if need arises or be closer to the kids school. ALso, which schools would you recommend? I hope it is not a tough one to answer.
So please give your best suggestions if you think this is a good idea and if it is feasible. I am also considering the option of putting the kids in private schools, if the schools near the universities are not too good.
thanks to everyone for sparing your precious time to reply to my query..

It's hard to answer this kind of question. What is your choice for the type of the residence? House or condo? Rent or own? What is your financial status? Do you have a few million to spend at ease?

Its a 10-15 minute drive to UH...not so ghetto anymore, you should have come by RM in the last 5 years to see the changes.

If you're looking to buy, why not Eastwood, Idylwood, Country Club?

Without knowing the budget it's hard to say--I mean West University Place (the area west of Rice U) is very nice and family friendly but quite expensive!
You've also got the Montrose area and like someone else said River Oaks (wealthy) and points along Allen Parkway near Buffalo Bayou, the Heights--these are all closer in and nearer to downtown and the universities but the prices vary greatly.
As far as schools--generally speaking the more affluent the neighborhood the better the public schools. Neighborhoods closer in are in HISD and you should be able to locate school stats and information on PTAs on their Web sites.

A budget is needed so realistic schools and locations can be recommended.

West University Place, Southampton, and Montrose would be three good picks.
