How about taking her to a play or musical theatre, the symphony or a special holiday musical event, the ballet, the opera? Absolutely world class entertainment. Holiday traditions here: Alley Theatre's "A Christmas Carol" and Houston Ballet's "Nutcracker".

The Museum of Fine Arts (have lunch there, too). Bayou Bend (home of the fabled Miss Ima Hogg), decorated for Christmas and full of American antiques. The Museum of Natural Science (the new Faberge exhibit, an Imax film, the Planetarium).

Shopping and lunch in the Heights, the West U village, Highland Village, the Galleria.

Shop at some unique places for groceries and beverages like the big farmers' market on Airline Rd., the small Saturday morning farmers' market near Greenway Plaza, HEB Central Market on Westheimer and the Spec's flagship store on Smith Street...perhaps your MIL will stock your larder and bar for the holidays!

If you have a long weekend, drive over to San Antonio. Don't try to see it all in a day as many people may suggest. It is one of the few cities in the U.S. that is truly unique.

Google the places you want to visit for hours, prices, parking info., etc. From now through New Year's the traffic will be awful, so allow lots of extra time.

Have fun! Since you are new to Houston, it would be great if you can post some feedback.

Hey does she like to knit or anything like that -- there are some great knit shops where women (and surprisingly some men) can go shop and then just sit and knit in groups. Lot of mothers, etc. like that. Great one called Knit inside the Loop. Good way to spend her day and she won't get bored.

Cool Suggestions..............

Of those 6 weeks she is visiting, consider San Antonio. There lots of wonderful places in SA to visit that are very unique. The riverwalk, Alamo, Natural Bridge Caverns, Six Flags/Fiesta TX Christmas Shows, Sea World Christmas Shows, Spurs game, etc........... Enjoy!

Unfortunately, my Father in Law passed away in May.. he would have been with her and we could have left them to their own devices but as it is we want her to share our first thanksgiving here and we want her to make new memories for Xmas and New year so hiding and the airport are not options.....this year anyway

Thanks for the suggestions though ....I will now start to plan some stuff.

Mrs. Harley, I have found that the AAA Tourist books are extremely helpful. You'd be surprised about all of the interesting things there are to do in your own town. It makes a great resource and you might find a new favorite place for yourselves, too.

Take her to Kemah one of the nights when they have live music. The weather is great to walk around these days.

Default Beautiful way to share during holidays

Also...something very special to share is the StoryCorps project that will be in discovery Green Park for 5 weeks. I read a book, Listening is the Art of Love, a couple of years ago, which was some of the interviews from across America, very poignant. It's an RV that travels to major cities, allowing those who reserve the time 40 minutes to interview each other. You get a personal CD, and there is a copy archived in the Library of Congress. Quite a memory maker... and who knows what you may learn about each other. See on Houstonians Tell Their Stories
