I think you'll find a wide variety of divergent opinions on this subject. It's not as if people are clamoring to get into Sugar Land any more than they are the other Houston suburbs. Sugar Land (unlike the other Houston suburbs) is its own city, so places like The Woodlands, Spring, Klein, Katy, Kingwood, and Cypress which have equally good numbers (and less violent crime) aren't part of this survey. CNN doesn't tell you that Sugar Land sits next to one of the most violent and dangerous areas in the country (SW Houston).

Sugar Land is certainly one of the nicest multi-cultural communities in the nation. It has a lot going for it, not the least of which is that it (as mentioned earlier is its own city).

Still, you have to consider that a lot people wouldn't consider Sugar Land the third best suburb in town, much less the third best city in the country. Sugar Landers might say its the best. They can surely be proud of the CNN ranking. There are many different factors and preferences that go into shaping one's opinion. When you hear superlatives, like #1 Selling Community in Texas, you might think its the top selling area in town, which it may not be, as there are other parts of town with dozens of smaller, equally (and in many cases, nicer) communities whose parts equal a bigger whole.

It's all a matter of personal preference.

I personally prefer wooded communities like Memorial, Cypress, Klein, Champions, The Woodlands, and Kingwood. I wouldn't even consider Sugar Land.

Other people hate trees, preferring the wide open spaces and feel just the opposite.

In short, I think you'll find that all of the major suburbs have highly desireable features. You can find them in nearly every direction in Houston.

sugarland WAS A small city that converted into a BURB. If they name another thing SUGAR there I will throw up! In fact I think there is a new law that prevents anymore subdivisions and streets being named Sweet or sugar... the image suffers from Hyperglycemia..

It all started from the SUgarfactory.. Sugarland was a farming/Sugar Company factory town.

What is wonderful about sugarland is that it is near to Houston. Has great man made lakes (i love water) easy access to I 59
It still maintains a small town attitude but that is slowly going away due to all the publicity like that article you read. Its becoming more of a burb.. but I will say.. it is attracting its own U of H campus; Memorial Hospital systems... it is a planned community far better than any others.... and in all honesty Sugarland always had more class IMHO than the other surrounding cities.. It has history.. and the natives were interesting people, so it had a good start... If I did not live in the Loop , or Galveston, I would choose Sugarland over Da Woodlands. The only thing real about the Woodlands are the trees.. the rest is all a figment of the dwellers imagination Hehehehe

Kingwood is worse.... It does not even have an imagination to figment.

And I am a native Texan...

Naperville ranks number 2 in that list. Number 1 is Fort Collins, CO.

You mean Alief is dangerous. Yeah Right! Alief or Sharpstown may not be desirable but it is not that dangerous. I even heard that Katy is even more dangerous than Alief.

Hahaha, Alief/Sharpstown are dangerous. Not all parts of it are, but they both are in the most dangerous part of Houston.

I remember when everyone wanted to live in sharpstown and Alief.. in fact they use to have the best school district.... especially new people from out of state moved there for the schools in the 60s and 70s...Perhaps that is why it went down. I still know people who live there... never moved away.. many were from othre parts of the USA. I think Kingwood and several other burbs will follow suit. Its the way of thiings I have seen over the decades...

NEW and Improved...burbs... all new people running away from the communities they tore up! Even First Colony in Sugarland has a few sections like that... People come to something new and then tear it up...

Its an endless fairy circle. Now they all want to come back to the inner loop and they can't aford it.

Katrina is long gone though. The part of Alief I was thinking of was the western half--the one in unincorporated Harris County east of SH 6.

Shapstown Mall is starting to revitalize. The Bellaire & Fondren intersection has been reconstructed to allow left turns and new traffic lights have been installed thanks to the TIRZ. I guess it is a sign of more things to come.

I remember that right before the renovation of Memorial City Mall five years ago, there were bad quality stores and the mall was ugly and outdated. I think Sharpstown is going to go the same way.
