If you do the volunteer thing, stay as close as you can to the center of Houston. I say this because in the outskirts, many volunteer groups are filled with married, near-retirement aged women.

If you want to fit in Houston, learn to speak Spanish.

meeting people in Houston
Welcome to Houston! I love the diversity of people here, in race/ethnicities, cultures, languages, viewpoints... if you are athletic, running around Memorial Park is a good way to meet people. You may also want to consider joining a health club. Rice University has a 3-mile track that is good for walking or running, but is generally less of a social environment than Memorial Park I think.
Some other options to meet people - if you are religious, you may want to explore some area churches. Most have young people groups. Volunteering is also another way to meet people. Someone else wrote that groups in the suburbs are more middle-aged, married women. Don't let that deter you. These women all have large networks, which are sure to include single, eligible women, and they'll pass along good feedback about you to others if you are a dedicated volunteer. What causes inspire and motivate you? There are many organizations that could use your help, and you will gain more than just introductions :-)

In addition to Meetup, I would suggest Meetin.org. It tends to be a slightly younger crowd--late 20's-30's. The group describes itself as:
"The MEETinHOUSTON group's primary focus is to provide a relaxed, 'non-pickup-scene' social environment for people to enjoy without paying membership fees. If you just moved to Houston or if you have lived here for a while, this group can be a great way to meet new people in the area. Join us for happy hours, camping, hiking, clubbing, art gallery tours, barbecues, ski trips and many other social events around the Houston area. MEETin.org is 100% free and 100% volunteers."

Welcome to Houston. You will find it easy to meet friends here. Most people party downtown. One thing about Houstonians, is that most of us are really friendly. Also try the gyms. Have fun and welcome!

The best way is meetup.com. It's free and they have different groups for all sorts of things you might like such as dinner group, singles group, adventurers group, book club, dog lovers, wine lovers, etc. You can join and everyone there is so nice because they are all there for the same reason...to meet new friends. You will be amazed.

I've lived in Houston for about a year now and I've met people in many different ways. I just started a blog and one of my blogs was about it. Check it out!
