When you say a trickle of water, do you just mean something as simple as leaving the water in the bathroom or kitchen sink running?
I'm sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but this is our first home and I've never had to worry about pipes bursting.

Coming from Scotland we find it very amusing what people think of as cold over here but then again we never ever see the heat of a Houston summer. We never thought it would get this cold in Houston!

I checked the weather back some in case I should head back but it could reach -20°C there tonight so I'll rough it out here.

I got to go in 2007 and 2008, and I have a feeling it will be a while before I get to go back. Kauai, Maui, and Oahu, what great trips!

I'm just doing some research on some places I'd like to visit this winter and summer and ran across this thread. My first thought was, "Are you serious?!" Then I laughed my head off. Wow, 29 degrees...I wish it was that 'warm' here in Minnesota,Dn't worry about your pets, the only time I bring my dog inside the house is when it gets -20F even though she does have access to the barn from her kennel. It hasn't gotten above 10 degrees here in quite awhile, so 29 would practically be a heatwave.
But don't worry, the whole country is in a cold snap right now...you're not alone.

your pets may be acclimated to the harsh minnesota winters..... but those in houston are NOT..... and neither are a lot of the people..... and houses are CERTAINLY not constructed for it...... and unless your dog is some sort of husky or malamute, bred for those conditions, then i still feel sorry for it having to endure temps to -20 before it is allowed indoors.......as far as hawaii.... heck, lets just head down to the carribbean.... LOT less flying time and reasonably close time zones......

I would know nothing of the way houses are constructed down that way...well...anywhere really, so I don't really have any input in that.
But yes, I would think that our pets are acclimated to our winters. Just bringing the dogs in the house in winter, they get overheated really easily because they are not used to the warm atmosphere, they prefer it outside. And like I said, they have access to the barn and its warm inside.
Lets not get all huffy and take offence. Its fun to read things like this, I have many friends and family who live down south. Its interesting to see peoples reactions to something they are not used to. This strange weather is all over the country. I am now regretting my decision to go to New York for new years eve and a little vacation. It was not fun.
