I am originally from Northern Europe, we pour hot water on windshields all the time if we are lazy to scratch it or if we forgot to put paper-box cover on windshield day before, I've never had any cracks or damages over 10 years.

Ofc not boiling hot, just hot :) Make sure windshield is dry before you go, since even hot water will freeze as you drive.

Do you have pipes above ground or something? I know that it's been cold lately, but from watching the weather on the Internet Houston didn't get that hard of a freeze. We were down in the low teens here in the DFW area and I never had a problem.

Most problems where in the sprinkler systems. Also some attics with very little insulation and in older homes with little insulation.

Should I not pour water on frozen pipes since they expand on heat?

I do the same on my car everyday. The windshield has ice on it and I pour hot water on it so I can see through the windshield.

Any ideas if this is a bad practice?
PMSL I love this country and it's people, they bring me laughter every day.
