Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion or 2 of plants that would survive year round (or go dormant in winter and then come back) in a window box.

Most flowering plants won't look good year round; summer is too hot and winter too cold. You're better off changing your window boxes out with annuals during the year.

Ivy does well long as it has some shade in the hot months. I have had 3 pots of Ivy in a hanger by a side door for almost 4 years now. If anything, I have to thin it out.

My nieghbors put fake flowers in their flower boxes on the second story. I didn't know they were fake until the flowers started fading after being in the sun so much. I wondered how their tulips lasted so long..LOL. They took them done after that....thank goodness.

I have periwinkle vine in mine year-round (ivy alternative), but change everything else out seasonally.

I do recommend the water-absorbing crystals or polymers (forget the brand name, but Buchanan's carries them). My box was nearly impossible to keep in good shape until I put those in. Now I can water every few days and the plants look fantastic. One bag goes a long way.

I've seen those polymer/chyrstal things- how often do you need to replace them? Good idea for the summer, when we're out of town, or all of the times I will forget to water...
