How far would you ideally want to live from your job? Whats your price range?

La Porte is a small community built around refineries. Deer park is adjacent to La Porte and has good, not excellent schools. Pasadena also has some nice areas when you get to the area around beltway 8 and Fairmont. Deer Park is has homes in the 100-150 range. La Porte has homes around the same range. Pasadena has homes ranging from 60-250k, depending on area.

Good luck, I'm a Realtor here.

You might want to look outside La Porte. Some friends of ours are trying to move out, and very unhappy with the area, particularly the schools for their two kids (grade and middle aged respectively).

Some parts of Pasadena are nice, and League City is very popular with families. If you're coming from out of state, you'll want to learn about hurricane evacuation zones, and wait until the new flood maps come in before buying.

How bad is the pollution along the Gulf Coast of Texas? I recently read an article about there being a high cancer rate, and was wondering if it's only in certain areas, or along the whole coast. Where is the least amount of pollution?

LaPorte has had some problems with school admin in the recent past. I would recommend Deer Park, South Pasadena (the nicer part) or Clear Lake. If you have to work on weekends for any reason, the Kemah area and bridge are crowded, so I would not look in League City (but that is your choice). Deer Park is actually a very good community with excellent city services and city-wide activities for the whole family. The Stars project which they (county, state, and communities) are starting to get under way will make the whole east side much more attractive in the not to distant future.

What is the Stars Project?

The links below kinda gives an idea about the Deer Park part of the project and mentions the Harris County part and the improvements along hwy 225 and the historical aspect of ship channel corridor:

Thanks Poltracker, I read it all. Sounds like a nice area to live. Only complaint I ever heard was the smell of the oil tanks that line the 225. Do they smell that bad?

Remember that the prevailing winds here are out of the southeast, that puts us upwind of most of the plants. I live less than a mile from Shell and rarely get odors of any sort. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year when a cold front or storm comes through. It is not really an inconvenience. The only time things get bad is if something goes boom. I believe the last incident that actually involved any neighborhoods was about 2 years ago and was precautionary. The last one that actually effected a neighborhood was over 8 years (closer to 10) ago when there was an major explosion on the southwestern end at Shell. Close to 20 years now since the Phillips explosion which managed to do in a few windows in Pasadena and kill 23 workers (heroic efforts by all the communities involved including tow boat fleets along the ship channel rescued over 600 stranded plant employees). Unlike other areas of Houston, the communities here are well prepared for emergencies of this type.
