I'm currently in the same process, though my price range is significantly lower.

My husband, who grew up in the Houston area (Spring) said that the spiders and snakes aren't that big a deal, but the cockroaches are insane. Considering the entire time I've lived in Western WA, I've only seen a handful of bugs (other than mosquitoes and spiders), this scares the bejeezus out of me.

Now, for the rest of you: I have a five year old who will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. What would be a decent suburb for the $300-400k market? I think we're leaning toward the north end. I'm in the energy sector.
I live in the Cinco Ranch area of Katy in a $300-400K kind of neighborhood. Public schools are excellent and my neighbors with kids who just moved here from north Chicago rave about them. Relatively close to the energy corridor. You should definitely take a look at Cinco--very high quality of life, family-oriented, yet within easy reach of Houston. We love it here!

Bellaire is a city incorporated unto itself, not and never has been a suburb of Houston. Story goes that at one time, many years ago, Houston city officials (in the middle of the night) changed boundaries for the city of bellaire so now it is surrounded. It's a quirky place to live but no more racist than parts of Houston and certainly not as racist as Sugarland or any other cities south of Houston.

You think Sugar Land is racist? I haven't found that to be true...

Knowing how nice Seattle is, and how important parks and outdoor activities are, I can't see why anyone would move from there to Houston. And both are at opposite extremes of temperature (Houston in summer, Seattle in winter). It's weird how nobody clued in the OP on that.

OP - So you're not going to visit first for a reality check? There's no way an internet site (or sites) can fully educate you as to what it's like down here. It's something to be experienced firsthand. Or is it easy and no big deal to relocate back and forth?

Snakes aren't an issue or a worry unless you want to spend your time hanging out around bayous and fields. Roaches, mosquitoes, and fire ants are the usual complaint pests.

Have you lived in Seattle? I have, for almost a decade. And I am very happily relocated to Houston. Biggest difference: Houston has SUN.

I suppose there may be a lot of churhes, but there aren't any more than anywhere else in the south. Also, Houston isn't that much of a good ole' boy town. I am all for discussing Houston's problems which are many, but there is no need to be unrealistic.

ditto that. we have been in Seattle for 2.5 years and I still cant get used to the gray, I hate it here, it really sucks. I am originally from Houston (The Woodlands) and we are probably moving back, which is what brought me to this thread.

I lived there many years and never saw a snake. Roaches on the other hand...

Wonder where OP chose to live??
