If there is anything worse than living in New York, it's driving in Jersey. Barriers in the middle of roads usually make for having to drive an additional 5 miles just to turn around. Never mind the labyrinth approach to road/"turnpike" construction. Why use a straight line when one can design a circle? Well, a freak'n circle allows for all those tax dollars to be used!

The best part of Jersey is that if you keep driving you'll eventually be in Pennsylvania.

I know exacly with th OP is talking about. It's the feeder roads, billboards, and miles of tacky looking strip malls that makes the freeways (and Houston) look ugly. Most other states don't have this system.

Like others have said you could live inside the city to avoid the freeways all together. Other than that, you may want to try Conroe or Montgomery with the rural roads. However, I have a feeling you would get bored out there if you are a single guy.

Using the word "gross" is a very negative and demeaning description. Houston takes alot of unfair bashing from outsiders and from peope in it's own family (state). Overall, I think Houstonians have a right to be sensitive.

I'm with P & S, just do another thread with the same title except replace the word Houston with any other city. See how "sensitive" people really are.

I always thought that C&D is informational site with forums. Bit more civilized Craiglist. So people from other cities/countries can come and write their opinions so other people can benefit from it. You guys are acting like there should be just patriotic, balanced, unbiased, always keep positive style posts....

I can tell you such super positive posts are quite useless and I would say they go against the spirit of information site for non-locals. If I would be considering moving to Houston I would be looking for controversies/negatives... I can find positives myself or read about them in any city sponsored page or tourist book.

Why don't you create houstoncirclejerk.com forums for people that are overly sensitive and offended by threads here?

These are the number 1 things that make Houston has this perception. I HATE feeder roads for this exact reason. Every city to a point has them and they look just as ugly though. I can think of a stretch on the Palmetto in Miami that has a feeder road. But it does not last long. Texas is the only state where they really take advantage of these things. But the lined up businesses, giant car dealerships, giant billboards, miles and miles of tacky strip malls are all along these feeder roads.

Yes. Cheap. That is the Texas way. I get it that it's efficient. But asthetics are certainly not in the conversation when it comes to things like this.

And you guys are saying Houston's highways arent scary? lol

My philosophy is to spend the least amount of time in my car, I speed to everywhere I go, there is just too much ground to cover.
You must be a scary driver. It doesn't take much to look straight ahead of you, especially on Westpark (it's elevated, btw). You act like you have to turn you head to the side and not pay attention.

I didn't say "cheap"; I said "efficient." Highways aren't built for aesthetics, although incidental considerations to the issue should be taken into account. It's just the way inner city highway development occurs in Texas.

I think the more recent construction of the Katy Freeway expansion in west Houston is a better example of newer highway development in inner cities within Texas. And $2.2B for construction of the expansion project certainly shouldn't be considered "cheap" by any use of the word. That project certainly trumps anything in Jersey...

Katy Freeway

Okay and you can be my #1 subscriber.

I'm not going to blame you for your misinformation, just pure ignorance on your part. Nobody is overly sensitive, its just that after beating after beating, time and time, yes Houston gets tired of being picked on.

There are areas that i see in some cities that just make you want to vomit, but it gets frustrating that Houston is the only city that continues to get these type of threads started on. I agree that 45 is an ugly stretch but there's so many other parts of Houston that are very attractive. Again like i said earlier, a city as big as Houston should not be classified as one thing.
