Houston is building a completely different system [as far as layout and location]. It will be strictly only for the inner loop until more development comes along. Atlanta and Dallas rail travels all over their metropolitan areas.

Yeah Houstons is for just part of its city while MARTA, DART and many other systems are for multiple cities in the region.

I prefer Houston's system. I think metros need to concentrate on the core and have commuter rails out to the burbs

This is a commuter rail. Its mostly a diesel ran locomotive system. Usually travels longer length than regular intercity heavy rail. This is what can run from downtown to places like Conroe. It has less frequent stops than a regular heavy rail system.

MARC Train @ Leadenhall - YouTube

This is the metro rail. Its mostly rail on third rail. Much higher capacity which its why Houston light rail will likely never have more riders than Atlanta. This is what Houston could use to get from downtown to them outer areas of the city. stops are more frequent but less frequeny than systems like Houston is building.

Commuter rail generally has fewer stops and most times take people from the burbs into town.

Dallas has light rail clear out to the burbs

what is going to stop Houston from having more riders than ATL, and why do you think Houston is going to have only light rail?? 68 additional miles of light rail and 200 plus miles of commuter rail have been approved by the voters. In additional rapid buslines like the quickline on Bellaire are going to be implemented to handle the off rail traffic

Houstons rail will have more traffic and it will be more successful than Dallas or ATL because of its set up. It is going to have commute rail from sugarland, pearland, clearlake, conroe, woodlands, and light rail in the city itself.

The Post Oak line is outside of the loop. Although I'm guessing it won't break ground anytime soon seeing as the SE line is under construction and some construction just finished on Post Oak.
