Does anyone have any idea on the tunnel system that connects parts of downtown? Apart from the obvous questions (are they safe, clean,) do people/professionals actually use them to get from point A to B within downtown? I have to find a way to get from the metro stop in downtown to the east end (towards the houston pavillions), is the tunnel system recommended? Any idea how long of a walk it would be? Thank you.

Ooooh. Ya know, I haven't been down in the tunnels in a looooong time. I do know they are used frequently by folks that work downtown and it is a good system as far as I remember.

This may help though: City of Houston eGovernment Center

No, the main entrance to the HP is off of Main.

The tunnel is the main underground "artery" particularly at lunchtime with plenty of options available. You can see downtown workers walking the tunnels for exercise (walk fast, not run) during lunch as well.

It closes at 7PM (it opens between 6am-7am, not sure on opening time) so if you have to be at work very very early or work after 7PM, you will have to walk the street instead.

Look at the tunnel map within the links others have provided. Stopping at a typical METRO stop off Smith or Louisiana at Lamar/Dallas/Polk, you'd be closer to Main by walking vs taking the tunnel. Allow at least 10 minutes.
