What's a neighborhood in Houston similar to Allandale/Crestview (Austin)
Basically a little older, trees, not really far out anymore but was once on the fringes when it was developed (so for Houston this would probably be outside of the 610 but inside the beltway), still somewhat affordable prices (Allandale ranges mostly in the mid 200's to high 400's) and with a really great public elementary school?

Sounds like possibly Parkwest and Westbury - sections zoned to Kolter or Parker elementary.

Thanks for the suggestion, especially on Kolter! Are there still homes in that zone that are under 400k that are 3-4 bedroom and not in terrible shape?
Any areas other than Westbury? I read an article that Westbury High took in an usually high number of Katrina kids, which puts a red flag up there must be lots of really cheap and/or voucher housing somewhere in that area.

Doesn't have to be, it's just where I'd picture this kind of place would likely be. Inside of the 610 will probably be price prohibitive in the good areas, and probably just a bit too urban/busy.

We don't have zoning here and unless you are going to live way far out in the master planned communities or can double your price point there is going to some level of funk not too terribly far away.
Westbury High is nothing to brag about, however, Westbury and Parkwest have done quite well. The areas adjacent to the north zoned to Bellaire get a lot more expensive.

Doesn't seem like there's much choice in Houston. This must be why the master-plans are so popular.
Westbury is just a bit far south, and wouldn't having a bad high school hurt property value? Anything more west closer to the I-10? Great elementary school, under 400k family homes?

Heights folks seem to like Harvard Elementary these days, also Travis is very good, but I'm not sure how much you get for 400K around there. The other one up north is Oak Forest Elementary, perhaps there's something affordable around there.
I second Modster's advice. We live in the Westbury area; it's affordable and both Parker and Kolter are exemplary. Yes, Westbury High affects property values; that's why homes are still under 400K.

Browning Elementary, which will locate you either on the eastern edge or just outside of the Heights is an outstanding school. I would look around there. Your bound to find some bargains.

Anything close in with good public schools all the way through is going to be, for the most part, over the $400k range and certainly over the mid $300's. There are always exceptions but there is going to be some kind of catch. Bad condition, backs up to a freeway, flooding history, whatever.

Garden Oaks on occasion. Several good elementary schools to choose from in the neighborhood. This just went on the market....
