Mayor Parker among Time's "Most Influential" | Houston Politics | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Quote:
It's not every Democrat who quotes Calvin Coolidge after spending 100 days in office as mayor of Houston. But then Annise Parker, 53, has never fit the mold. She's a demure, pearl-wearing lesbian businesswoman with three kids and a longtime partner.

It just shows Texas truly is diverse. Both liberals and conservatives are welcomed; we don't discriminate.

I agree Easy'; what has she influenced that was so great and I missed? How long has she even been in office? She must be doing a lot of good things and I just don't get out enough to hear of them.

We could have elected Donald Duck as Mayor and the ranking would have been 13th. It has everything to do with Houston being the 4th-largest city in the US and nothing to do with who the Mayor is.

Just sayin'...

I am not saying that she WON"T be - but she is not yet. There hasn't been time. Those lists are so stupid.

I agree...she hasn't really done anything, but based on the wide stereotypes of Texas and Houston this was a huge leap out of Prehistoric times. I mean seriously, people at school (especially those from California and NY) ask me if Houston is safe for a black person and ask me how can I be from Houston if I'm black, gay and a musician. How did I live 21 years in this conservative backwards hellhole...

In any case, this TIMES article is the stuff people read, or see on their Yahoo news updates, whether it's true or not, because most people don't have the time or money (or perhaps the desire, based on stereotypes) to check it out for themselves. I guess we should be glad we're in there?
