Look at Platinum Pools. They have a great website that actually has pictures of what you can expect for the moeney. I use to hear them on 950 AM on weekend mornings and they seemed quite knowledgable. I recently recommended them to a coworker who got several bids and not only was their quote $11k cheaper, but they answered his questions more thoroughly and offered higher-tech components than the other outfits did.

I pay Thunderbird pools 50 dollars a month to come do the chemicals. As long as I clean out the Polaris and the traps every few days and backwash a couple times of year the pool is fine. However, I do pay for them to clean out the filters in spring. I can't put that stupid thing back together.

But keep in mind, after the pool is over three years old, something will always be going wrong with it or the Polaris, and I would budget 1500 a year just in case.

Are you looking for someone to build your pool, or maintain it? You can often use two different companies for this (I did).

I use Monarch to maintain our pool. I have them come twice a week, and do everything. For ten years, I did everything myself--cleaning, scrubbing, chemicals & testing, etc. I no longer have the free time I did, so now I use Monarch for everything. They come twice a week to clean, add chemicals, do it all. I think it's $240/month. You can go once a week for around $150.

Thanks for the information. I am looking for a pool builder. I did not realize it was going to cost so much to maintain..wow. I can't even imagine the cost with the electric and water bill..can anyone give me an estimate of how much they pay for those two alone?

Yeah, a pool is a big old money pit. And when you go to sell the home you won't get nearly what you paid to have it put in. It's something you have to really love and be passionate about if you decide to build one, it's a huge commitment.

Pool maintenance is very simple and can be done very inexpensively. I never owned a pool before I bought a house here last summer and have never paid for a pool cleaning service. I simply paid a pool guy to show me how to take care of everything and haven't had any trouble maintaining it myself.
