Clear Lake has some really neat lifestyle options if you like boating, fishing, beaches, etc. I understand Clear Creek ISD is very good, as is Katy ISD.

Simple way to choose...

Do you like Jimmy Buffett or Clint Black?

Well they on completely different sides of Houston. Focus on where you will be working, then choose the burb.

''Clear Lake'' is a title that usually refers to a near 'burb' inside the Houston city limit, while Katy is a town/area/burb all in itself. Consider that for property taxes, police response time, etc. (HPD's sucks)

Katy is about 30-35 miles from downtown, Clear Lake 20-25 miles.

I-10's traffic is horrendous now but will get a lot better soon. I-45's ranges from so-so to somewhat bad, and isn't getting better anytime soon.

Clear Lake has been developed and established already, probably not a new housing development for the past 10 years. Many homes there are 40+ yrs old. Katy is still growing.

General figures: My mid-90s Clear Lake neighborhood fetches about $80-100/ sq ft. Katy development that's only a few yrs old is probably running closer to $60-70/ sq ft, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

But like EasilyAmused said, figure out where you're working first. Clear Lake and Katy are a good 50+ miles from each other.

I grew up in Clear Lake, but now live in Cypress. It's a tough choice. Katy schools definately rank better, but it was nice spending summer days on the lake. Traffic into town stinks either way (especially I 10). But you do have lower property costs in Katy (bigger or newer home for the price). Good luck.

Thanks for the input.... as far as my job goes, I'm a teacher, so I can pretty much move to either one. My husband works in houston, but can do a lot of work from home.

Someone said something about taxes.... which place has better (lower) taxes? Also, does Clear Lake have an area like Centera in Katy or town center in sugar land?

Clear lake only has Baybrook Mall area and then the Kemah Boardwalk which caters to tourists. However, there are many upper income hi-rises being developed in the seabrook area and with that expect many upscale retail shopping venues to start appearing that will probably be very similar to the areas you speak of.

When the hurricanes do hit - people in Katy shouldn't even be leaving - that mass panic is what attributed to the awful mess trying to leave town during Rita.
