I might be f'd. I'm mid-thirties but I don't feel I have to behave like a grandpa. I still like uh "young" music (from my era mind you). I am (still) single and in a huge trap since singles are usually 10 years younger or more. To find a place to hang out where people have, uh, LIFE and are single but not immature "kewl" drunk college kids at the same time??... oh shoot...

At home by 10??? Ugh. Really??

The one place I've read that plays music I REALLY love is called Numbers, but I'm told the area is terrible (or is it just homophobia). Oh, I love the MUSIC (New Order, Cure..) but not so the fashion or goth attitudes which supposedly are the norm there.

I've been to Bakers Westheimer and meh, really crappy cover bands.

Keep hope alive! Here are at least a dozen places the 30's+ set can mix/mingle and have a great time:

1) Belvedere in Uptown
2) Benjy's (upstairs lounge) on Washington
3) Black Labrador on Montrose
4) Cova Wine Bar on Kirby Drive
5) Cyclone Anaya’s bar in Midtown on Gray
6) Downing Street on Kirby
7) La Carafe on Congress
8) Marfreless off Peden
9) Max's Wine Dive on Washington
10) Monarch in Hotel Zaza on Main
11) Remington Bar at the St. Regis off San Felipe
12) The Tasting Room in Uptown

There are probably 2-3X this number of places I'm leaving off but these came quickly to mind. There are also tons of dance oriented clubs where you see a mix of 20 and 30 year olds (and even some 40+ year olds).

Age is a mindset so dance the night away at Numbers and then go eat late night at Katz's, House of Pies, Mai's (when she re-opens), or wherever you fancy...

It's funny to hear this - can't be concerned about how others perceive the way you live... do what you like and ignore the noise!

My parents went dancing into their fifties so don't let the naysayers get you down...

BTW to George Dynamo - I think part of it is cultural as well. If you've been to London and see how people of all ages continue to love going out for drinking, lounging, and dancing, you know what I mean. Or if you've been to Spain where they just start going out after 10 PM...

TX you seem to be the master on this subject. Can you tell me which one of your choices is best for the late 40s to 50ish crowd? One that plays good music, 70s music.

Thanks

From the previous list, for the 40's to 50's crowd, I like the following:

1) Cova Wine Bar on Kirby
2) Downing Street on Kirby
3) La Carafe on Congress
4) Monarch in Hotel Zaza on Main
5) Remington Bar at the St. Regis off San Felipe
6) The Tasting Room in Uptown

As a general observation, the more mature the crowd, the more they veer toward upscale hotel and restaurant bars, wine places, live music (i.e., jazz, eclectic, etc.) venues, and honky tonk spots.

In terms of "good music" or 70's music, the live places are likely your best bets for less current/mainstream music; however, whether the music resonates with you will be a function of the artist playing that night so I'd check website calendars ahead of time.

For live music, here are some places:

1) Blanco’s on West Alabama (note: very casual and country music)
2) Continental Club (originally from Austin) on Main in Midtown
3) Gallant Knight on Bissonnet (note: jazz)
4) Mucky Duck on Norfolk
5) Red Cat Jazz Café on Congress
6) Sambuca (originally from Dallas) on Texas Ave at the base of the Rice Hotel

If you go to the Red Cat Jazz Café, make sure to stop by the Hotel Icon; it has a gorgeous interior and the bar is a neat place.

And there are some distinct spots adjoined to restaurants that are worth a visit for a drink regardless of age such as Sidebar in Gravitas in the Fourth Ward and the Grove in Discovery Green.

Hahahahahaha... you had to say that. I am half Spanish and lived in Granada (south Spain) from 2000-2004. The independent music scene and the partying was insane!

I went to Numbers and was thoroughly impressed. Fifth song Wes put was Perfect Kiss by New Order. Nuff said. Win.

tstone: I kinda agree age is not just a mindset, but it's the personal situation too. I haven't found the woman of my life/married and that is a huge factor. Things change when you marry and have kids.
