The Huntington Area received $1 million in Federal, State and local money to study and implement transportation changes to help move the area forward. The Tri-state Airport is also about to finish a runway extension project which will allow larger and more planes to fly into the area along with other planned projects as well. Lots of great things on the horizon for sure.
The runway extension project at Tri-state has now been completed:
HUNTINGTON -- Officials at Tri-State Airport, along with U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller and U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall and other dignitaries, cut the ribbon Thursday on a 500-foot extension to the airport's runway.
The extension makes the airport's runway 7,016 feet, the longest commercial runway in West Virginia. Martinsburg has a longer runway at 7,815 feet, but it's used for private and military aircraft only.
Completion of the project means two things -- it helps Tri-State Airport meet safety standards of the Federal Aviation Administration, for which the airport had previously received a waiver. It also could mean newer, longer flights out of Tri-State, said airport Director Jerry Brienza. One that the airport has been working toward is a direct Allegiant flight to Las Vegas, he said. It's now possible because the longer runway allows for bigger planes that can carry more fuel.
