Rumor has it that they'll be an announcement and press conference, by the end of the week, regarding the Flint property being given to Marshall for the proposed baseball stadium.
Sounds about right. Last year, the rumor was that dirt would start moving this fall. Hopefully this is just the first of many new developments coming in the next 5 or so years.
Not a whole lot of specifics or new info watching the presser. One thing that was new though was a timeline. They want to put the project out to bid in Nov 2019, start construction in March 2020 and start playing in March 2021. Hamrick mentioned that it would be built with private funds. Hopefully we'll get more specifics from the upcoming articles with interviews.
"I got a call three years ago from Mike Lee, commissioner of the Frontier League," Williams said, referencing an independent summer baseball league with teams in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. "He said, 'I understand you're looking to build a baseball stadium. We'd like to come in and talk to you.'"
Huntington has a history with the Appalachian League, a rookie-level circuit affiliated with Major League baseball, having served as home of a Chicago Cubs affiliate from 1990 through 1994.
Former Appalachian League Commissioner Lee Landers expressed interest in the league's possible return to Huntington before he retired after the 2018 season.

I had that idea in the back of my mind as soon as I saw where they planned to build the stadium. This explains why the city included buying the land for the stadium in the proposal that won them the ABC (America's Best Cities) award. I think the stadium in Morgantown was a cooperative venture between the county and the school, and it seems to be working out well with a summer league team using the facility after the school term ends.
People like going to baseball games. This should turn out to be a good thing for the people of Huntington as well as for Marshall's baseball program.
