It's Hard to Find a Rental House in Huntington! (houses, taxes) - City-Data Forum

I mean, goodness! I would think that with the housing market being down, a lot of houses would be for rent! But they're not.

I want a nice, decent house, nothing special, with a garage. Preferably in a quiet area. Not too long a drive from the VA hospital. I'd kind of prefer Ohio for taxes/cost of living, but at this stage would happily snap up something in WV. The KY tax penalty is too high for me. I'm thinking $1,000 per month.

Single, non-smoker, no pets.

On craigslist there are a couple a week that come up. In the local newspaper maybe one a week. No one has responded to my emails/telephone calls yet. . . I am checking most evenings, too. Bummer!

I have spoken with a half dozen realtors that have been recommended to me, or were in the local Rental magazine (last updated (online only) in July. . .). I tell everyone I meet that I'm looking - a hundred plus so far. . .

I looked at one that was nice, that I could have had. But it had a very large garage and a large screened-in porch, and they were asking $1,500/mo. $500/mo too much IMHO. But then I may be wrong, if houses are that rare here!

You tend to find more houses for rent in Huntington by driving around than by looking in the paper. I saw one on the corner of 8th St and 11th or 12th Ave if you are interested. Not sure of the price and couldn't see the number when driving by but I can get it for you. This would put you a block or two from the park with quick access to downtown and not too far from the VA.

I'll keep an eye out for others for you as well.

Thanks. I'll drive by there tomorrow! Of course. . . in Huntington "8th Street and 11th Avenue" only narrows it down to two locations, a mile apart. . .

I spent about five hours just driving around three weekends ago, and never saw a "for rent" sign. But there is another person in my position that I met today, who has focused on just driving around. So I guess I know what I'm going to be doing this weekend!

Well, I drove by this afternoon. And there didn't seem to be an 8th and 11th on the West side, so forgive my snarkey response. . . A very nice house - with a garage! But a bit larger than I need, and nicer. Beautiful outside and apparently lots of wood inside. And they want $1,625 a month for it, which is a bit more than I want to spend. . . But then the only other house I have found was $1,500 - so I have this sinking feeling. . .

I still love Huntington!
