I've never had any experience living in the apartments but here's what I know from living in the area. Greentree Apartments seem very nice in both locations and appear to be well maintained. Garden Park apartments are next to the interstate so noise may be an issue but otherwise seem to be nice. Courtyard seems to now be The Village on 6th and these are newer apartments and do seem nice as well. By outer appearance, I'd say these are the nicest although that has little to do with with inner appearance and service. As for Cloister, I'm not familiar with these but based on the location, they are not in as nice of an area as the others. If you are going to be a student at Marshall, I'd say go with Greentree by Marshall or the Village on 6th. If you are not here as a student, I'd say go with Garden Park or Greentree by the Mall. You also might consider The Waterford Village in Barboursville. These are a little closer to downtown than Greentree or Garden Park and they are newer as well. Most of the Apartments close to Marshall generally have student residents whereas the farther you are from Marshall, the more "residents" you will have. Here are some links and I hope they help.

Well if you are going to be here for awhile, you might consider "The Townhomes of Park Pointe Way" . These are newly built and just off of the interstate and very close to Ritter Park. Here is a link if interested.

Acutally, I drive past Waterford everyday and they are in a very convenient location. I think you'd be happy there.

The design firm I used to work for did all of the cabinetry, contertops and appliances for the kitchens and baths, so I can vouch for the quality of the products used in the apartments. From the choices made by the contractors, I know that everything inside is really beautiful.

I haven't been in any of the apartments, but I have been to their clubhouse/commons area and I love it-- I wish it was in my house. They have a full kitchen with granite countertops ajoining a family room type area with leather sofas and club chairs and a huge flat screen tv over the fireplace. On either side of the fireplace are french doors that lead out to to the pool area. Next door (in the same building) is their fitness area, but it's not visible from the "family room". I'd check it out if I were you--it seems like a great place to live!

Default Garden Park

Moving to Huntington area for a few months to work at VA Hospital. Was wondering if Garden Park is safe? Looked everywhere for a decent apartment and Garden Park seems the best choice. Bringing a small pet, so that limited the choices? Not from the area so any help about Huntington would be helpful.

Ok... I consider myself the expert on the rental market in Huntington.. ha ha I've moved every year.
It really depends

1. Courtyard, (now called The Village on 6th) like the plague. It is essentially a step down dorm. It's very overpriced for what you get, which is very little. It is convenient because it is very close to campus and they have a washer and dryer in each unit. Those are really the only two things I enjoyed about the place. The pool never opens until late July, they always have to do work on it and its closed by late August. It is rather ghetto like, their are always drunken people throwing beer bottles everywhere. Keep in mind I consider myself to be a partier and I find it horribly annoying how they act. There is noise at all hours of the night, your car stands a good chance to get vandalized if its a nice newer car, and glass everywhere makes it easy to get a flat. The maintenance people just walk in at anytime, they yell "MAINTENANCE" really loud and just walk in your apartment and come in your bedroom. The buildings were apparently throwing together in a few weeks too, horrible construction. Avoid!!!

2. Winsdor Apts. Located on 3rd Avenue between campus and downtown. Looks decent from the outside, but the biggest problem here for me has been the landlord. A crazy lady (Mrs. B) who tries to milk you for as much money as possible. I've been in Europe for 3 months now, and we're paying rent for my apt, and she's sending my parents electrical and water bill overages. How is that? She also makes up random rumors and tells my mom. She told my mom that the neighbors complain I sit around and cry and they can hear it. WTF??? ha ha ha My mom found that hilarious because I'm as unemotional as you can get. She also hasn't remodeled the apartments since they were built apparently, refuses to fix things, and yet still charges $850 for a tiny two bedroom apartment. My favorite memory of this apartment was when there was some guy looking in my window at 5:00 in the morning one day. My mom called her and wanted locks put on the windows, she came over and put a stick in the window. Oh also we had a brand new SUV backed into in my parking spot that cost us $2000 to fix. DEFINITELY AVOID THIS PLACE!

Both of Green Tree's locations are decent. They are one the more expensive end for a one bedroom apt though. Their Marshall location is amazingly convenient to campus, right on 6th avenue behind the performing arts center and new alumni center.

Garden Park I haven't heard much about, but it looks wonderful. I'm going to go check it out once I get back to Huntington in a few weeks. The only set back I'm seeing with it though is that its in Barboursville. While that is a great area, its a littler farther than I personally wanted to go. I'm always late for everything and traffic between there and Huntington during rush hours might be a little too much for me.

Same thing with Waterford, I love Waterford Village. The apartments are perfect, if they would just be closer to Huntington. I personally want to be able to ride my bike/walk to campus during the warm months and be close to the night life. But if that isn't important to you, Waterford and Garden Park seem great!

Cloister I have never heard of.. so I can't really help you there.

One company I would recommend though would be University Suites, they have several buildings, decently maintenanced, reasonably priced, and decently close to campus.

If being close to campus is a priority you might check out Big Green properties too.

I'm thinking I'm going to try to find something somewhere on the south side of Huntington, perhaps by Ritter Park. Somewhere within reasonable distance to 4th ave for the nightlife, and within biking/walking distance to MU.

Sorry this is so long, but if you need anymore help feel free to PM me
Welcome to Huntington!!!

Apartment complexes are fine, but in 12 years renting in three states I have always found the best places I have ever lived were apartments in houses that are owned by folks that only have a few units. They care more what their places look like most often. The key is to make sure the folks that own them live LOCALLY. Not out of state! Usually more privacy and units like these can be found all over as opposed to a few locations.

Re: The Courtyard, now known as The Village on Sixth. ABSOLUTELY avoid this place. It's not just bad in the way the previous posted described, it is dangerous. My older son lived there a few years ago and was robbed. We thought that was a fluke. My younger son moved from the Marshall honors dorms into one of these apartments with friends. However, those friends moved out because of the expense and he was left getting three partying roommates whom he did not know.

He has been robbed TWICE in the past three weeks, the last time on Christmas eve!!!!! This time, they got his laptop, his PS 3 and his X Box 360. The complex has not changed the locks even though the front door was not busted. This leads me to believe the robber had a key, especially since his apartment is on an upper floor--not exactly an obvious and easy choice for a burglary. The complex never changed the locks after my older son's break in, either, but he moved out shortly afterward.

We are actively trying to get my son out of there. This place is unsafe. Then again, Huntington in general is VERY dangerous. Marshall is a great school, but Huntington is a drug addict's paradise, and the kids who are working and going to school are not safe from them and all the crime that type of widespread drug culture brings.
