Those are good informative articles. Thanks for posting them. A lot I didn't know there.
Does anyone know where the location shoots were held? The first maybe 2/3rds of the series looks a lot like West Virginia/Kentucky, but towards the end it looks a lot like somewhere in the mountain west.
When it was supposed to be Christmas and all of the leaves were still on the trees, it was a little hard to believe with leaves not only still on the trees but also still green. I think when you are from an area a movie was made about though, you tend to be a little picky about the small things.
From what I've heard though, the biggest reason they didn't film here was 1. To not have to worry about power lines, roads, mines etc. being in the shot 2. Sets already being in Romania from the Cold Mountain movie 3. Not enough tax credits here.
Reading that article, the guy who played Cap Hatfield was from across the river in Prestonsburg, KY. This whole thing is funny for me too because my dad is from Mingo County and my mom is from Pike County. It's kind of weird to know of all of the places in the show first hand.
I've never heard that about Romania and I don't know enough about it to really compare. Ireland has a lot of similarities topographically but they don't seem to have the large forested areas that we have here. You always hear a lot of comparison between WV and Switzerland as well but the mountains there are obviously much larger overall.
