Default Aashid Himons aka Little Archie

dahdigital-

I don't have personal knowledge, but a Google search turns up references (http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:8SwRooVaahQJ:www.marshall.edu/alumni/1960s.asp+%22little+archie%22+parliaments&hl=en&gl =us&ct=clnk&cd=2&client=firefox-a (broken link)) to a band called "Little Archie and The Parliaments", including some recollections by a Marshall alum.

It appears that Aashid Himons (apparently w/o The Parliaments) went on to become quite well known around Nashville: http://spaceformusic.com/tribalspirit.html and http://www.goarchie.com/aashid/aashbio.html

Hope this helps.

Regarding Little Archie, I played music with him a couple of times...he was a singer and the front man for the Huntington, WV, Parliaments. When he was with them, I remember there was a place downtown Huntington that had a twisted beat up saxophone in the window from one of their sessions. Can't remember the name of the club...just that saxophone. I never knew his real name (just Little Archie) but, in my brief contacts with him, I'm guessing that (1) his name wasn't Aashid; (2) I doubt if he stayed in music much more past the '70s; and, (3) he didn't strike me as the type described in the web link above...but, stranger things have happened. He did sing a bit with a group from Lexington, KY, originally called 'The Temptashuns'. When they released their version of "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", they changed their name to 'The Magnificent (Mag) Seven' to keep from having legal problems with the Motown Temptations.

If you've been in Ashland a long time, which it sounds as if you have, there were a few popular bands during the middle sixties. I played drums for a while with a group from Ashland, KY, called 'The Mustangs' or 'The Kickin' Mustangs'. It was an R & B group put together by Larry Creech (sax, flute) of Westwood, KY, and fronted by a guy named Danny Shortridge (singer). Pat Lovin (sp?) lead guitar, Larry "Frog" Johnson on bass, and Brad (lordy, I can't think of his last name) on keyboards made up the rest of the band. A guy named Terry Sanders was normally the dummer for this group but, at the time, he was in the Air Force. There was another fairly popular group at the time, from Ironton, OH, called 'The Fugitives', and a couple of years earlier, 'Johnny and the Mystics' from the Boyd County area.

It's strange some of the stuff I remember.

Default Archie / Parliments

I am from Huntington, WV born and raised. I knew Archie when I was a child. He was always around my family for some time. I no longer live in WV. I just happen to be in Nashville, Tn. and I can't remember how I found out Archie lived there? but, I went to his Recording Studio, I have one of his CD's., He's changed his name and he's doing well.

Some of the Parliments are still living in Huntington, WV. Melvin Harris and Jerry Courts passed away several years ago. The original Parliments (Bank) guys are still in Huntington. You're just 15 min. away from Huntington, pay those guys a visit.

Default Little Archie & Parliaments

I'm familiar with some of his work ... as front man for their records on Cabell & then as the Magnificent 7 on Eastern Records & Dial Records

Does anybody know how to contact Archie or any of the other guys in the group or anything at all about Cabell Records .. who the owners were & are they still around ?

Andy

Actually, the Temptashuns changed their name to the Mag 7 as you said but, when they recorded the cover of "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" it was Larry Orr who sang the lead. Meade Brown was the drummer. Larry previously was with "The Nightcrawlers" out of Louisville, KY before joining the Mag 7. I have forgotten most of the other members of the group. Larry went on the become an officer in Personnel in the Air Force stationed in California (I was on the same base with him) and later he went into advertising in Memphis.

The Parliments, on the other hand, used to play at the old Joyland Park Casino in Lexington, KY quite frequently in the 60's.

I was the drummer for a local band "The Classics" before joining a group out of Nashville "The Casuals" with Richard Williams, John Orr, Tommy Jolly and others. The Casuals were the back up band for Brenda Lee during that period.

I can never recall "Little Archie" singing with the Mag 7 before they broke up.

This is where Larry is today: Larry Orr :: Move in ready! (http://larryorr.prudentialcooper.com/websites/PrudentialCooper/LarryOrr//Default.asp?PN=AgentBio&AgentID=1951 - broken link)
