A friend has an older home there and said he would give it away. Its very livable and been made into 2 apartments..I wonder if this property would make a good rest home or Church retreat etc? He said the whole little town has died with almost all the stores boarded up and closed. No jobs. Any ideas. ?
The town is in Wetzel County. It is a typical northern Appalachian small town with a lot of folks who are into hunting and fishing and outdoor pursuits. They have schools and stores and the like, but not a lot of amenities. The nearest areas for hospitals and city stuff would be Morgantown/Fairmont, or somewhat further away Wheeling/Moundsville. In the first case you'd be around 45 minutes away, and in the second around an hour.
My wife grew up in Hundred and can tell you a lot about it. I can as well been there quite a few times. Only place to shop is the dollar general you are at least 15 miles to the closest McDonalds or grocery store.
On a map, find the very southwestern corner of Pennsylvania (i.e., the base of the northern panhandle of WV). Hundred is about 2-3 miles southeast of the corner, more or less midway between Morgantown and New Martinsville.
It is far from an metropolis of any sort. They used to have a High School there, but not sure if they still do... more than likely they go to Pine Grove Valley from there. The nearest significant town is likely Waynesburg, PA which has most of the amenities. It's a 36 minute drive. New Martinsville, which would also have most amenities, is about the same distance at 37 minutes. For specialist medical care and the like Morgantown is around a 50 minute drive.
The nearest stores that would qualify as super markets would be in Waynesburg or New Martinsville.

Yes Hundred High is still there and so is Long Drain Elementary. Its a cute little town just not for us.

Whether to consolidate the four high schools (Magnolia/New Martinsville, Paden City, Hundred, and Valley/Pine Grove) in the county is a long running debate. Merging Paden City and Magnolia would be an obvious combination, but strongly opposed by the Paden City residents. Valley and Hundred (either with each other or with Magnolia) is difficult due to the transportation times involved (some students already riding the bus close to an hour just to get to Valley, for example). In fact, I think they pay an excess levy on their property taxes in Wetzel County in order to keep the separate high schools.
Buses sharing the backroads with over-weight, over-size drilling rigs has stiffened the opposition.
New Martinsville does have a community hospital, a couple of grocery stores, fast food and sit down restaurants, and a WalMart. Sadly, Works Drive-In Theater is now a shopping center.

I remember Works Drive In. Back in the day, drive ins were a major part of young folks social lives.
Hundred is one of the smallest towns in the top half of WV and it's along route 250 smack dab out in the middle of freakin' nowhere between the Wheeling area, New Martinsville, Waynesburg, PA and Morgantown...it's like an urban legend in Wheeling because if you've been there it's like considered cool or something. When crazy trip stories come up at a steak fry after a few beers, people will say..."Oh yeah? Well I bet you've never been to Hundred!". That's one of the long, backroad routes from Wheeling to Morgantown but some people will do it just for the heck of it or for the change of scenery and to say they've done it.
